Hey there, fellow travelers!
It's your travel blogger, Susukkotdari, back with more insights.
A while back, as I was gearing up for my Ho Chi Minh City adventure, I shared some golden tips for exchanging currency in Vietnam. Today, I'm thrilled to dive into my personal experience with currency exchange, specifically in Mui Ne!
I headed straight from Ho Chi Minh Airport to Mui Ne, and that's where I found my go-to spot for exchanging money: The Laundry. Unlike larger cities, Mui Ne doesn't have many official exchange offices or gold shops. Instead, it's these laundromats that offer the best exchange rates.
So, let me share my firsthand review of exchanging currency at Mui Ne's unofficial exchange hub.

The Laundry Currency Exchange in Mui Ne

Mui Ne isn't a bustling metropolis like Ho Chi Minh City or Da Nang, so you won't find many official currency exchange offices. Instead, places like 'The Laundry' fill this niche, offering surprisingly good rates.
📍 The Laundry Exchange Location

The Laundry is conveniently located on Nguyen Dinh Chieu Street in Mui Ne. Yes, it's literally a laundromat, but it doubles as a reliable spot for exchanging money!

While washing machines and dryers hum along, doing their job...

...a simple desk near the entrance serves as the currency exchange counter.

Exchange rates fluctuate daily, so they're always written on a board. On the day I visited, 100 USD got me 2,670,000 Vietnamese Dong. To give you some perspective, airport exchange counters typically offer around 2,200,000 VND for 100 USD. That's a difference of 470,000 VND for every $100, which translates to a saving of roughly ~$18! For an exchange of $400, you're looking at saving around ~$72. Now you understand why this place is considered Mui Ne's top spot for currency exchange, right? Keep in mind that airport rates can vary, so always double-check on the day you travel.
Exchanging $400

In Vietnam, you'll get the best exchange rates for crisp, unfolded $100 bills. You can see from the board that rates for $50, $20, or $10 bills are lower.

When I told them I wanted to exchange $400, they quickly typed it into a calculator and wrote down the total: 400 x 2,670 = 10,680,000. The '2,670' on the board means you add three zeros to get the full Dong amount. So, $400 x 2,670,000 VND = 10,680,000 VND.
They often give you 500,000 VND notes, which are large denominations. It's usually more convenient to ask for smaller bills like 200,000 VND or 100,000 VND for everyday use.

Worried about a language barrier? Don't be! You simply point to the exchange rate on the board and indicate how much money you want to exchange. They'll show you the calculated amount on paper, so there's no need for extensive conversation. It's really straightforward.

After exchanging $400 for our group's travel fund, each person also exchanged an additional $100 individually. As you can see, they simply wrote down '100 USD = 2,670,000 VND' below the initial calculation.

And just like that, the exchange was done! Always double-check your received notes for any tears or creases. Also, with such large denominations, pay close attention to the number of zeros when making payments – it can be a bit confusing at first!
📍 Exchange Process Summary
1. Confirm the Exchange Rate: The daily rate is posted on the desk, and the staff will show it on a calculator.
2. State Your Amount: Tell them how much you want to exchange, and they'll write down the equivalent in VND.
3. Receive Dong: You'll get your Vietnamese Dong.
4. Get a Receipt: They'll provide a receipt for your transaction.
The entire process took less than 5 minutes. It was much faster and simpler than I expected!
Advantages of The Laundry Exchange in Mui Ne

✅ Excellent Rates: Among the best you'll find in Ho Chi Minh City and Mui Ne.
✅ Quick Service: Transactions completed in under 5 minutes.
✅ Convenient Location: Close to the popular seafood street.
✅ Secure: It's a legitimate exchange point, so you can trust the process.
✅ Smaller Denominations Available: They'll mix in 50,000 VND and 10,000 VND notes.

I particularly appreciated that they provided a mix of smaller denominations. If you only receive 500,000 VND notes, it can be tough to get change. They thoughtfully included 200,000 VND and 50,000 VND bills. Even so, since I still had a lot of 500,000 VND notes, I asked them to swap some for smaller 200,000 VND or 100,000 VND notes, and they happily obliged.

Instead of waiting to exchange more in Ho Chi Minh City, we decided to make another trip to The Laundry in Mui Ne. On that day, the rate for $100 had actually gone up slightly to 2,675,000 VND – a small but welcome increase!

With its excellent rates and convenient service, The Laundry in Mui Ne truly lives up to its reputation as a top spot for currency exchange in Vietnam.
I imagine other laundromats in different regions of Vietnam might offer similar services, so if you're deliberating where to exchange your currency, definitely give The Laundry a try. You won't regret it!
As of the article's publication date, Mui Ne Laundry Exchange offered 2.67 million VND for 100 USD. In contrast, airport exchange offices typically offer 2.2 million VND, resulting in a difference of approximately 400,000 VND (about ~$14) per 100 USD.
In Vietnam, uncreased 100 USD bills generally offer the best exchange rates. You'll find that 50 USD or 10-20 USD bills have lower exchange rates compared to 100 USD bills.
While the Laundry Exchange primarily gives out 500,000 VND high-denomination bills, you can request to receive 200,000 VND or 100,000 VND bills. They are usually happy to accommodate such requests and may even include smaller denominations like 50,000 VND or 10,000 VND bills.
The entire process of exchanging USD to Vietnamese Dong at Mui Ne Laundry Exchange took less than 5 minutes. It's a quick and simple process, from checking the exchange rate and presenting the amount to receiving the VND and getting a receipt.
