1. How to Get There via Public Transit
Bus Terminal | Terminal Central de Autobuses del Norte |
Bus Company | Autobuses Teotihuacan |
Round-Trip Ticket | 162 MXN (approx. $10 USD) |
Frequency | Every 15-20 minutes |
Travel Time | Approx. 1 hour |
Located just about 30 miles northeast of Mexico City, Teotihuacan is incredibly easy to visit on a budget. My husband and I decided to skip the expensive private drivers and take the local bus instead. After a quick breakfast, we caught a cab straight to the northern bus terminal.

Once you arrive at Terminal del Norte, walk all the way to the far left end (near Gate 8 or Sala 8). You will see a dedicated ticket booth with a prominent "TEOTIHUACAN" sign pictured above.

Before boarding, double-check that the front window of the bus has a sign that reads "PIRAMIDES." The condition of the buses can be a bit of a roll of the dice—our ride there was quite basic, but the return bus was modern and very comfortable!
Keep in mind that this is not a strict express service. The bus will make occasional roadside stops to pick up locals along the way. After about an hour of rumbling through the outskirts, the driver will call out "PIRÁMIDES!" to let you know it's time to jump off.

Main Ruins | Pyramid of the Sun, Pyramid of the Moon, Avenue of the Dead |
Known as the "City of the Gods," Teotihuacan is one of the largest and most significant archaeological sites in Mesoamerica. Interestingly, this city was built long before the Aztecs arrived—they actually discovered the ruins later and gave it its current name. Pretty mind-blowing, right?

As soon as we passed the ticket counter, we were greeted by the monumental Pyramid of the Sun. It is absolutely massive! Photos really don't do justice to its scale; it's a jaw-dropping sight up close.
I recently watched a travel documentary about Teotihuacan and learned so much context that I missed during our self-guided trip. If you want to fully appreciate the complex history of this place, I highly recommend booking a guided tour.

Connecting the Pyramid of the Sun to the Pyramid of the Moon is the Avenue of the Dead. In ancient times, those chosen for human sacrifice walked this path, viewing it as a sacred honor to be offered to the gods.

Standing near the Pyramid of the Moon, I took this shot looking back down the Avenue of the Dead. Be warned: there is absolutely no shade out here. A wide-brimmed hat, sunscreen, and plenty of water are non-negotiable.
While you can no longer climb to the very top of the main pyramids due to conservation efforts, walking around the complex still requires quite a bit of footwork. The terrain is uneven, so comfortable sneakers are a must.
3. Unmissable Teotihuacan Experiences

Even though we did a DIY trip, if I could do it all over again, I would definitely opt for a guided excursion or a bucket-list hot air balloon ride.
