When you think of a trip to Bali, snorkeling and diving are likely at the top of your itinerary.

Most travelers immediately picture Nusa Penida when they hear "Bali snorkeling."

But after some digging, I discovered a spot in Bali often touted as one of the world's best snorkeling destinations.

Welcome to Menjangan Island.

​

The name was completely new to me at first,

but the idea of a hidden, off-the-beaten-path gem was exactly what drew me in.

​

I wanted to snorkel in pristine, quiet waters

rather than jostling with massive crowds at typical tourist hotspots.

That's why I chose Menjangan for this Bali adventure.

To give you the bottom line up front:

The journey there was a bit of a trek,

but it ended up being the most unforgettable part of our entire Bali trip.

1. Where is Menjangan Island?

​

​

Menjangan is a small, uninhabited island located off the far northwestern tip of Bali,

falling under the protected area of West Bali National Park.

​

It is a world away from the bustling, highly developed scenes of Kuta or Seminyak.

Here, you're surrounded by raw, untouched nature.

​

​

​

It's highly regarded as a premier diving and snorkeling secret.

Because the water is crystal clear and the currents are incredibly mild,

it's a perfectly safe and enjoyable spot for beginners and children alike.

​

The biggest reason we chose Menjangan for our 2026 itinerary was simple:

"An uncrowded ocean."

​

Nusa Penida is undeniably stunning,

but recent reviews warned of elbow-to-elbow snorkeling traffic.

We craved tranquility, which made Menjangan the clear winner.

From Bali's Ngurah Rai International Airport, it takes about 3 to 4 hours by car.

Honestly, the commute isn't the easiest.

When we arrived and woke up to the view of the Menjangan sea the next morning,

we instantly knew the long drive was 100% worth it.

2. Things to Do in Menjangan

Menjangan is globally renowned for its snorkeling and wall diving.

​

The underwater visibility is staggering.

Even if you're just snorkeling at the surface, the vibrant coral and marine life are incredibly vivid.

​

We dedicated one day purely to snorkeling,

and the next day to a discovery scuba diving tour.

​

You'll notice a lot of Western travelers come here specifically for the diving,

giving the whole area a very laid-back, serene vibe.

​

The biggest perk is experiencing the ocean in complete peace,

without the chaotic rush you'd find in places like Nusa Penida.

​

Menjangan is especially famous for its dramatic wall dives.

Even on a beginner's discovery dive, the sheer scale of the underwater drop-offs was breathtaking.

Fun fact: "Menjangan" translates to "deer" in Indonesian.

While cruising near the island on our dive boat,

we actually spotted wild deer roaming the beaches.

​

It's these rare, untamed moments

that make this part of Bali so unforgettable.

overnight stays and camping on the island itself are strictly prohibited.

4. Monsoon Lodge Deluxe Room Review

​

We booked the

Monsoon Lodge, a private villa-style room set deep in the forest.

​

​

The room is quite spacious at around 538 sq ft,

and since we were a group of three, an extra bed was comfortably set up for us.

​

​

​

​

The draped canopy bed

really amplified that tropical Southeast Asian getaway vibe.

​

​

The bathroom was generously sized,

and all the essential eco-friendly amenities were fully stocked.

​

But the absolute best part

was the profound silence surrounding the lodge.

​

​

​

Instead of a towering hotel block,

the private lodges are thoughtfully arranged around a central pool,

so it never felt crowded or noisy.

​

At night, it's so peaceful

that all you hear is the rustling wind and the occasional bird call.

​

Opening the doors in the morning

to let in the crisp Menjangan forest air was magical.

It truly embodies the concept of a "nature retreat."

5. Resort Facilities & Dining

The resort grounds are massive,

so getting to the beach or the restaurants requires taking the resort shuttle.

​

​

The shuttle is an open-air, safari-style double-decker truck.

It's surprisingly fun to ride and added a unique touch to the experience.

​

Because you are literally staying inside a national park,

there is absolutely nothing commercial just outside the gates.

This means you'll be eating breakfast, lunch, and dinner at the resort.

​

​

Breakfast is an à la carte order system,

offering everything from traditional Balinese dishes to Western classics.

​

You can order as much as you like without restrictions,

making it fun to try different items every morning.

​

​

Breakfast is served at the Bali Tower,

which is also famous as a spectacular sunset viewpoint.

​

​

During the rainy season, it's closed for dinner,

so we only visited for breakfast,

but the panoramic views were incredible.

​

​

​

For lunch and dinner,

we dined at the Pantai Restaurant down by the beach.

​

The food was quite good,

though prices are definitely on the higher side, as expected for an isolated resort.

​

​

​

However, eating right on the water's edge

with that kind of ambiance made it well worth the premium.

​

6. The Snorkeling Experience

Without a doubt, the absolute highlight of our Menjangan trip was the snorkeling.

​

​

​

You depart right from the resort's private jetty.

​

The water is incredibly calm,

and the visibility is so high that it feels like you're swimming in an aquarium.

​

We split our time with one day of snorkeling

and one day of discovery diving.

Both were phenomenal experiences.

​

What I loved most

was the sheer lack of crowds.

​

​

There was no fighting for space or getting kicked by other tourists' fins like in Nusa Penida.

We had the ocean almost entirely to ourselves.

​

It felt like a true escape.

​

Rather than a commercialized tourist trap,

it felt like an exclusive, hidden sanctuary in the heart of nature.

The travel time is significant,

and staying for just one night would feel too rushed.

I highly recommend staying for at least 2 nights.
