When planning your Malaysian adventure, the Melaka River Cruise is an absolute must-do for a truly romantic and picturesque experience.
Stepping into Melaka's Dutch Square, you'll be enchanted by its exotic charm. The river, flowing between Jonker Street and Dutch Square, offers the perfect opportunity for a delightful cruise.
While the daytime scenery of colorful, fairytale-like villages is beautiful, Melaka truly earns its nickname as the "Venice of Malaysia" once the sun sets and the vibrant lights illuminate the riverbanks. It's simply breathtaking!
During the day, you can clearly capture the colorful murals lining the river, the historic Dutch and Portuguese architecture, and the brightly painted buildings under the glorious sunshine.
However, due to the warm weather, we highly recommend taking the cruise at night rather than during the day. And there's another great reason!
After sunset, when the lights come on, the bridges and riverside buildings glow even more brightly, creating a magical atmosphere.
The evening breeze is wonderfully refreshing, making the night or sunset cruise (especially when the golden hour hues paint the sky) our top recommendation.
How to Get to the River Cruise Jetty
Many visitors come to Melaka on a day trip from Kuala Lumpur, but we enjoyed a leisurely 3-night, 4-day stay here.
We opted for a sunset cruise and purchased our tickets directly at the jetty.
The price for foreign adults is 50 MYR per person, with no senior discounts available. There are no online pre-booking discounts either, so we recommend buying your tickets on-site to fit your travel schedule. Just be aware that queues can be a bit long in the evening!
Card payments are accepted, and purchasing tickets doesn't take long. However, you might have a bit of a wait before boarding, especially during peak sunset hours. We waited approximately 20 minutes before boarding.

We recommend purchasing your ticket and getting in line by 6:30 PM.

The jetty is conveniently located very close to Dutch Square and Jonker Street, making it easy to incorporate into your travel itinerary!
✔️ What's the best time to board?
Between 6:40 PM and 7:00 PM is ideal. If you board during this window, you'll experience both the stunning sunset hues and the dazzling night views as the city lights up. Photos taken when the sky still has some natural light are often much more beautiful than those taken in complete darkness.
We arrived about 30 minutes later than planned and had to wait, which was a slight disappointment.
✔️ Best seats: Inner edge or front of the boat
Always aim for seats along the edge of the boat. It's perfect for taking photos, especially if it's not raining. Alternatively, the very front seats offer excellent views.
You can board and alight near Kampung Morten at the Taman Rempah Jetty. If you keep your ticket, you can explore the area and re-board later.
However, most people board at Muara Jetty, and fewer use Taman Rempah Jetty for boarding or alighting. There's a chance there might not be empty seats available on your return journey. (The cruise staff will often tell you this directly).
✔️ Any downsides?
The river cruise is quite dependent on the weather. Sudden tropical downpours (squalls) can temporarily halt or delay operations. If it's raining heavily, your view will be obscured.
Unlike continuous monsoon rains, Malaysian downpours typically last only an hour or two. So, if it starts raining, we recommend finding a nearby cafe to wait it out.
The cruise takes you past Kampung Morten, a traditional Malay stilt village with beautiful wooden houses, which looks particularly stunning with its night lighting. You'll also pass over Xavier Bridge and Taman Rempah Bridge, connecting the old and new towns, each with unique lighting and designs.
If you're visiting Melaka, we absolutely recommend taking the River Cruise!
It would be a shame to just take the river cruise and head back. Before your cruise, make sure to capture some amazing photos at Dutch Square with its iconic red brick buildings.
On Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, Jonker Street transforms into a pedestrian-only area with a vibrant weekend night market. It's a fantastic spot to explore local street food and souvenirs.
