Matsuriya Yamahana: Where the Locals Go for Sushi
When you're searching for sushi spots in Sapporo, you'll find that most of them are either conveyor belt sushi or omakase.
And there's a good reason for that! Hokkaido is renowned, even within Japan, for its incredibly fresh seafood.
This has led to the flourishing of conveyor belt sushi restaurants that offer exceptional quality seafood at surprisingly reasonable prices.

Typically, when I think of conveyor belt sushi restaurants back home in Korea, the sashimi quality can sometimes be a bit less impressive than in a traditional sushi spot.
So, I actually went to Sapporo without huge expectations for conveyor belt sushi there.
But wow, this place was a sushi paradise! The taste, the quality, and the value for money – absolutely perfect!

📍 Matsuriya Yamahana
Japan 〒064-0913 Hokkaido, Sapporo, Chuo Ward, Minami 13 Jonishi, 10 Chome−2−25 ストークマンション山鼻公園
Location

If Matsuriya Yamahana has one minor drawback, it's its location. It's a little removed from the city center,
meaning it's about a 10-minute ride by public transport from Susukino Station, or a pleasant 30-minute walk if you prefer.

It's only about a 7-minute taxi ride, so I actually called an Uber. I made sure to apply a discount coupon before my trip, so I didn't end up paying for the fare!
Typically, a ride this distance would cost around 1,000 yen.
Waiting Time

Even though this hidden gem rarely sees tourists, you can expect a wait during peak lunch and dinner hours.
While people usually report waiting for about 30 minutes to an hour, we managed to bypass the queue entirely by visiting around 3 PM, during an off-peak time.

Once inside, you'll spot a machine for registering your wait. However, if there's no line, you don't actually need to register – simply wait for a friendly staff member to guide you to your table.
Interior Ambiance

The restaurant's interior was surprisingly spacious and much cleaner than it appeared from the outside.
While it's unlikely you'll find staff who speak Korean, simply stating your party size will lead to warm guidance – from being shown to your seats to receiving clear explanations of everything you need to know.

Near the entrance, you'll find seating primarily designed for solo diners.

Head to the right, and you'll discover tables perfect for groups.

You'll find comfortable tables with cushioned seating stretching out before you.
Aside from us, every single diner was a Japanese local!
Not hearing a single word of Korean made me truly feel like, 'Wow, this is genuinely a local sushi spot!'

Each table comes equipped with the essentials: hot water, chopsticks,
rakkyo (pickled scallions), and soy sauce.
Menu

Ordering is a breeze – simply use the tablet conveniently located at your table.
You'll be spoiled for choice with an incredibly diverse menu featuring everything from classic sushi, gunkan maki, Korean-style rice rolls (gimbap), and delightful desserts!
Just so you know, you can choose whether to have wasabi and how much rice you'd like
when you place your order!

Surprisingly, they do offer Korean language support, but it's not entirely perfect,
some menu item names come out a bit awkward and hard to understand in translation,
and some weren't translated at all!
When we were curious about the sushi that wasn't translated,
we actually used ChatGPT to help us order! 😂
Sushi Delights

Even though it's a conveyor belt sushi spot, perhaps because it wasn't too busy,
the staff brought our orders directly to our table!
Our very first orders were salmon sushi, Aurora salmon sushi,
and tuna sushi! So excited!

The absolute most popular menu item at Matsuriya Yamahana is, without a doubt,
their salmon sushi! And as soon as I laid eyes on it,
I immediately understood why it's so beloved – the fish slices are incredibly generous!

Honestly, the fish size here is probably the biggest I've ever seen on sushi.
And yet, the quality and taste didn't suffer at all;
it was just as good, if not better, than other sushi places!
It was so incredibly delicious that it made me wonder, 'Is this the average standard for conveyor belt sushi in Japan?'
If so, wow!

Purely based on my personal preference, between the Aurora salmon and the regular salmon,
I actually preferred the regular salmon more.
It had a richer, melt-in-your-mouth feel with more luscious fat!
If you prefer less fat and a firmer, more robust texture,
then the Aurora salmon comes highly recommended!

The tuna and flounder were good, but I wouldn't say they were 'mind-blowingly delicious!'
However, considering the price, they were definitely not bad at all.
But, they weren't quite delicious enough to make me want to reorder them.

For something a little different, or perhaps a palate cleanser, we ordered shrimp tempura sushi and
karaage sushi!
The shrimp tempura was fantastic – perfectly crispy with a thin, light batter, which I loved.
However, the karaage sushi felt a bit like eating chicken nuggets with rice... 🤔 Not quite what I expected!

I have to confess, I've *never* truly found beef sushi to be delicious before.
Not even once! But this place? This was the *first* time I genuinely thought, 'Wow, this is unbelievably good!'
I absolutely recommend you order it!
It's made with direct grilling, so you get that lovely smoky aroma,
and the juicy richness of the beef just melts in your mouth.

To round off our sushi adventure, we indulged in shrimp, sea bream, and horse mackerel sushi,
and finished perfectly with a sweet egg sushi!
It wasn't just the salmon; every single piece of fish we tried was absolutely fresh,
with not a hint of fishiness anywhere.

And for dessert, we ordered this delightful homemade pudding!
Honestly, I initially thought, 'How good can pudding from a sushi restaurant really be?'
Just a little something to cleanse the palate, right? But then I tried it... and oh my goodness, it was genuinely delicious!

Perhaps it's obvious since it's homemade, but this pudding is completely incomparable to the ones you find at Japanese convenience stores.
It's in a league of its own!
So incredibly smooth and sweet, I'm craving another one just thinking about it!

Once you've finished your meal, just tap 'calculate' on the tablet PC,
and a friendly staff member will come over to scan your plates with a special machine.
The machine automatically identifies and tallies everything,
so there's no need to worry about stacking your plates by color or anything like that!

The two of us ate until we were absolutely stuffed,
and the bill came out to just over 4,500 yen.
For this kind of quality at this price, I'd say the value for money is insane!
These days, even in Korea, sushi restaurant prices have gone through the roof,
but here, the price is lower while the quality is similar.
Maybe even better...?
Although it's a little bit away from the main tourist areas,
nevertheless, it's a place absolutely worth visiting.
I highly recommend you check it out!
It takes about 10 minutes by public transport and about 30 minutes on foot to get to Matsuriya Yamahana from Susukino Station. If you take a taxi, it will take about 7 minutes and typically cost around ~$6.
During peak lunch or dinner times, you typically have to wait between 30 minutes to an hour. However, if you visit during off-peak hours, such as around 3 PM, you can usually be seated without a wait.
Yes, you can order using the tablets provided at each table, and they have Korean language support. However, some menu items might appear in awkward translations or not be translated at all, so it's not perfectly comprehensive.
The most popular item is the Salmon Sushi, known for its large cuts of fish and excellent quality. We especially recommend ordering the Seared Beef Sushi, which is flame-grilled, offering a rich smoky aroma and juicy flavor.
