An Essential Okinawa Bar Experience

No travel adventure is complete without unwinding with a drink or two as the evening sets in. While Japan is famous for its lively izakayas, sometimes you crave something a little different. During my recent trip to Okinawa, I stumbled upon LABO, a bar with a fantastic vibe and surprisingly great bar snacks that stood out from the typical izakaya scene.

A Chance Discovery

The exterior of LABO caught my eye as I walked by on my first night in Okinawa. At the time, I was keen on diving straight into a local izakaya experience, so I passed it up. But the unique ambiance lingered in my mind, and by the second night, I found myself drawn back to its inviting glow.

Inviting Atmosphere

Though not a huge space, LABO had a distinctly cool and cozy vibe. There are a few seats by the window offering a view of the street, and inner bar seating. While the window seats might be nice for an early evening drink, the area tends to quiet down quite early. By the time most people are looking for a bar, the street outside is often deserted, so the real charm is definitely inside at the bar.

Creative Bar Snacks

Cold brew chocolate and white chocolate tofu

Upon being seated, we were served a complimentary amuse-bouche: cold brew chocolate and what appeared to be white chocolate tofu. That white chocolate tofu was absolutely divine! The cold brew was also excellent, setting a high bar for what was to come.

For my first drink, I chose a cold brew cocktail, hoping to combine two good things. Honestly, it was a miss for me. The individual elements were great, but together, they seemed to lose their charm, highlighting their weaknesses rather than their strengths.

Disappointed with the cocktail, I tried to order more of the delicious white chocolate tofu, only to be told they had run out!

However, the kind staff, seeing my disappointment, scraped together the last bits and served it to me as a complimentary treat. It was such a thoughtful gesture, letting me enjoy that delightful snack one more time!

After that, we ordered truffle potato chips and a few other dishes. It was late in the evening and we were already a bit tipsy from our other stops, so I don't quite remember everything we ordered, but we definitely enjoyed the rest of the snacks!
