Your LA Rental Car Trip
Essentials, Booking, and Driving Tips

Los Angeles is truly a city where getting around without a car can be a challenge.
From Hollywood and Santa Monica to Venice Beach and Griffith Observatory, the city's iconic attractions are widely spread out. Calling an Uber or Lyft for every trip can easily rack up costs of ~$38-46 per ride, making it tough on your travel budget.
That's why a rental car is usually the more economical choice for most travelers.

However, there's a crucial point to remember when booking your rental car: always opt for a rental car that includes full-coverage insurance.
In LA, rental cars can sometimes be targets for theft, and driving at night in unfamiliar areas can be risky. Including comprehensive insurance is absolutely essential for peace of mind.
After comparing various platforms, I found Klook offered excellent insurance coverage and reasonable rental car prices, making it a great choice.

During peak seasons, popular car models get booked up fast, so it's a good idea to reserve your car as soon as your travel dates are firm. Don't forget to use the discount code for a better deal!

Rental Car Essentials:
✔ International Driving Permit & Your Home Country Driver's License
✔ Credit Card (in your name) - for the deposit
✔ Charging cables, sunscreen/sunglasses/light shirt – the sun is strong, and rental car windows often lack dark tinting.
LA Driving Precautions:
✔ Never leave valuables visible in your car.
Vehicle break-ins are unfortunately common in LA. Always put luggage in the trunk, out of sight.
✔ Refuel before returning the car.
Most rental agreements require you to return the car with a full tank. Fill up near the airport before dropping it off.
✔ Car seats are mandatory for children.
California has strict car seat laws. Children under 8 years old or under 4 feet 9 inches tall must be in a car seat or booster seat.

An LA Travel Essential: eSIM
Equally as important as a rental car for your LA trip is an eSIM.

In LA, you'll constantly be relying on Google Maps while driving, searching for destinations, finding great restaurants, and checking into your accommodation. Without data, navigating the city becomes incredibly difficult.
Given that some areas have safety concerns, getting lost or losing data connection could potentially put you in a genuinely risky situation.

LA trips are often longer vacations, making international roaming quite expensive. Pocket WiFi devices can be bulky and inconvenient. And while traditional SIM cards work, swapping them out means your home country number won't be active.
That's why I chose the Yusimsa eSIM with unlimited data. Yusimsa eSIM uses local networks, offering fast speeds and an unlimited plan, so you don't have to worry about data usage, even if Google Maps is running all day while you drive!

If you install your eSIM before leaving home, it will automatically connect the moment you land at LAX. This made it incredibly easy to find the rental car pick-up center and use Google Navigation right from the airport.
LA Travel Pro Tips & Must-Know Info

📌 ESTA: Apply for it well in advance!
The U.S. has a Visa Waiver Program (VWP), allowing eligible travelers (including many global explorers) to visit for tourism for up to 90 days with just an ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) – no full visa required.
Remember, ESTA is not a visa; it's an electronic travel authorization.

ESTA approval can take up to two weeks or even longer, so it's absolutely crucial to apply at least a month before your planned departure. Without an approved ESTA, you might not even be allowed to board your flight, potentially ruining your entire trip.

📌 LA Immigration Interview Tips:
Even with an approved ESTA, entry into the U.S. is not guaranteed. The final decision rests with the immigration officer at the airport.
✔ Answer truthfully and calmly.
You might be asked about your travel purpose, where you're staying, your return date, and your travel funds. Stay calm and answer clearly and concisely.
✔ Be aware of potential phone checks.
Immigration officers can check your phone's social media content and inspect your luggage.
✔ Have your return flight details ready.
Always have proof of your onward or return ticket readily available to demonstrate your departure plans.

📌 Additional LA Travel Tips:
✔ Parking costs can add up.
Parking in LA is generally expensive. Expect to pay ~$10-30 per day as a baseline. Always check parking availability and rates for your destinations in advance.
✔ Tipping culture is standard.
When dining out or using services, a 15-20% tip is customary and often expected.
✔ Be mindful of certain areas at night.
Areas like Downtown and near Venice Beach can have a higher presence of homeless individuals. It's advisable to avoid these areas late at night.
✔ Sunscreen is non-negotiable!
LA's UV index is very high. With lots of outdoor sightseeing, sunscreen is an absolute must-have to protect your skin.

While preparing for my LA trip involved a lot of planning, the actual experience and vibe were truly unforgettable!
Book your rental car as soon as your dates are confirmed, apply for your ESTA right after booking your flights, and install your eSIM before you depart.
Get these three things sorted, and you'll have 80% of your LA travel preparations complete!
