LA Downtown Walking Tour 2026: From Last Bookstore to Rooftop Bars

As many of you plan your LA trip, I'm sure one of the most common things you hear is, "Downtown is dangerous."

Recently, I watched a YouTube video by Ssoyi where she shared her experience of having her bag stolen during her Europe trip, and she mentioned using a Brandon anti-theft cross-body bag.

It was my first time hearing about it, so I looked it up. With its zipper-locking mechanism, it seems like it wouldn't easily open, even in crowded places.

Ssoyi's husband was diligent throughout their trip, but on the last day, he didn't use the lock, and that's when the incident seems to have happened. I felt so bad for them 😭.

I think it would be a fantastic idea to get one of these before your next trip to Europe or the US, so I'm just going to recommend it right here at the beginning of this post!

Of course, you know you shouldn't rely solely on just one bag!

Wear your cross-body bag in front of you, and I recommend keeping your valuables and shopping bags as inconspicuous as possible.

From my personal experience walking around, popular tourist spots like The Last Bookstore, Angels Flight, and Grand Central Market had a decent flow of people, and the atmosphere wasn't as dangerous as I had imagined.

However, I highly recommend that you absolutely avoid including the Skid Row area in your itinerary.

The route I'm introducing today focuses on the main paths most tourists take, making it a great course for first-time visitors to LA to follow without any worries.

Park Once and Walk Everywhere

Parking in LA Downtown is expensive, and street parking isn't easy to find.

I really don't recommend parking downtown.

It usually costs around $20~$50.

Each spot is closer than you might think, making it perfect for walking around. It's a great way to explore the area over half a day to a full day.

The Last Bookstore

Recommended Stay: 30-40 minutes

It's a representative tourist attraction in Downtown LA.

Famous for its unique interior and a tunnel made of books, it's a fantastic spot for snapping some memorable photos.

While it's larger than I expected, 30-40 minutes was plenty of time to leisurely explore and snap some photos. (Confession: beyond that, I personally didn't find much else to hold my attention!)

About a 10-minute walk from The Last Bookstore

One-way: $1.50

Commemorative Round-trip Ticket: $3.00

With an LA Metro TAP card: One-way $0.75

Operating Hours

Daily: 6:45 AM - 10:00 PM

This is a funicular (cable car) known as the shortest railway in the world.

I saw it in the movie La La Land and absolutely had to ride it myself!

Though the ride is short, it was a wonderful spot to soak in the vibrant atmosphere of Downtown LA.

Once you reach the top, you're treated to a unique Downtown view that truly feels different!

Grand Central Market

​

Just a ~2-minute walk

It's right across the street!

This was the perfect spot

to grab lunch.

With a huge variety of eateries, it's easy to find something that suits your taste.

I even tried the famous Eggslut,

but my palate is more accustomed to Egg Drop,

so I actually preferred Egg Drop... haha

(just my opinion!)

Since I wasn't driving anyway,

I indulged in a glass of beer, too.

Angels Flight is right there.

It's literally right across the street!

LA City Hall Observation Deck

Just a ~10-minute walk

This free observation deck is a hidden gem

that surprisingly not many people know about.

After passing through security,

you can take in panoramic views

of downtown LA.

On a beautiful day,

the clear skies allow for stunning long-distance views,

perfect for snapping some amazing photos!

The Broad

​

Just a ~10-minute walk

It's a fantastic contemporary art museum

with free admission.

Reservations are essential!

If contemporary art is your thing, I highly recommend a visit.

And even if you're not a huge art buff,

the building itself is stunning and perfect for photos!

to plenty of fantastic restaurants.

Wrap Up Your Day at Perch Downtown Rooftop Bar

For the perfect end to your downtown adventure,

I highly recommend Perch.

Head up 30-40 minutes before sunset

to catch both the gorgeous golden hour

and the twinkling city lights!

Looking out at downtown LA from the rooftop,

it was the perfect place to end the day.

While it's possible to walk from The Broad to Perch,

if it's late at night, it's better to take an Uber

instead of pushing yourself to walk!

Definitely make a reservation!

When you make a reservation, if you ask for a table with a view,

while it's not guaranteed,

they'll do their best to accommodate your request.
