My 2026 Sapporo trip took a bad turn at Jingisukan Yuuhi. Frustrating waits, poor service, and a shocking billing issue made it my worst dining experience. Read my unfiltered review.

I'm sharing this review with the hope that many travelers will see it.
While I've used the phrase 'Sapporo Jingisukan restaurant' in the title to attract attention,
Please, I implore you, do NOT go to this place.
This wasn't just my worst dining experience in Japan; it was the absolute worst restaurant experience of my entire life.
I'm talking about Jingisukan Yuuhi in Susukino.
Foreigner discrimination, blatant disregard, and secretly altering receipts? Unacceptable.

Jingisukan Yuuhi in Susukino

Many popular Jingisukan restaurants are clustered in the Susukino area of Sapporo, and Yuuhi is among them.
We chose this particular spot out of many options because it had high ratings and positive reviews on Google.
The Wait

We had made a reservation well in advance through Hot Pepper, but even arriving on time, we weren't seated immediately. We had to wait upfront.
A staff member apologized three times, asking us to wait a little longer. We ended up waiting for 15 to 20 minutes before finally being let in, with no explanation as to why.
Inside Atmosphere

The interior was larger than expected and incredibly noisy. While it didn't impede conversation, I would absolutely NOT recommend it for a family trip or if you're traveling with elderly parents.

We were guided to a window seat, and the staff seemed friendly at this point, so my mood wasn't bad. The problems, however, started shortly after.
The Menu

Seating is limited to 120 minutes.
A staff member fluent in Korean handed us a Korean menu, and since they understood us well, ordering was smooth.
We ordered:
- Salt-aged Premium Lamb Loin
- Salt-aged Very Thick Lamb Steak
- Salt-aged Lamb Jingisukan
- Salt-aged Lean Jingisukan
Along with a Sapporo draft beer, a lemon sour, and an egg-scallion bibimbap recommended by the staff.
The Experience Unravels

Initially, my husband mistakenly ordered the wrong type of lemon sour. We called a staff member to correct it, and thankfully, the change seemed to be communicated. However, two different staff members then arrived, one after another, each bringing another lemon sour!
We kept explaining that we hadn't ordered them, and meanwhile, my husband's draft beer still hadn't arrived after a considerable wait.

When we asked again about the beer, yet another staff member brought... another lemon sour. Eventually, the draft beer was correctly delivered, but then the meat took over 30 minutes to arrive.
To make matters worse, we saw tables that arrived much later than us get their food instantly. Only when we pointed out the excessive delay did a staff member finally apologize and serve our meat.

Despite the significant delay, we tried to be understanding. However, the heat and smoke from grilling the meat were not properly absorbed by the exhaust fan, making the air stiflingly hot. It was truly uncomfortable – an experience I haven't had in a BBQ restaurant in a very long time.

Honestly, the taste was just mediocre. It wasn't because of the terrible service; the meat itself was genuinely unremarkable.
Many parts of the meat were tough, and because of the long delay, the bean sprouts and onions that came out first were completely burnt, making them inedible alongside the meat.

Then, when we tried to order an additional draft beer, we pressed the service bell – but no one came. They completely avoided looking our way.
The staff seemed busy, so we pressed the bell at 5-10 minute intervals, but they didn't come even after we pressed it four times. Meanwhile, they were attending to the table right next to us. It was at this point I realized, 'Ah, they're doing this on purpose.'
But that wasn't even the most infuriating incident of the night.

After paying, we received the receipt, and to our shock, it totaled ~$82 (13,255 JPY).
My husband immediately said this couldn't be right and carefully reviewed the receipt. We found many items we hadn't ordered, and some items we'd only ordered once were listed as two.
We told the owner that the receipt seemed incorrect and that some items weren't ours. The owner then asked us to mark the items we hadn't consumed.

Since I can speak Japanese but can't read it well, we used a translation app to check each item one by one and explained it to them. The owner told us to wait.
Then, the owner suddenly kicked the counter and yelled, 'Bukkoroshiteyaru!' (which means 'I'll kill you!').
Anyone who watches Japanese anime or dramas knows this is a strong curse word rarely used in daily conversation.

For a moment, I wondered if he was talking to us. But from the situation, it seemed he was yelling at his staff. Still, to shout 'I'll kill you' in front of customers?
Did he think we wouldn't understand Japanese? Even if we didn't, is it acceptable to kick the counter violently in front of customers?
To top it off, we had mistakenly checked an item as eaten that we hadn't, and we clarified this three times, with the owner acknowledging it. Yet, the refund we received was only ~$29 (4,700 JPY) in cash, still missing the cost of that one item.

I was tired from our continuous travel schedule and just wanted to move on, so I took the partial refund and left. Later, when I looked up Google reviews, filtering by lowest ratings, I saw multiple reviews — all from foreigners or Koreans — advising others to always check their receipts.
This clearly indicates it's not an isolated incident. Smiling politely while secretly altering receipts and ignoring service bells? It felt incredibly petty and dishonest.
From the taste and friendliness to the service and blatant discrimination against foreigners, Jingisukan Yuuhi was the worst restaurant experience of my life, and I will absolutely never return.
