When you’re planning a road trip across South Korea, that big question always looms: “How far should I go?” I've personally embarked on both a long-distance 3-day, 2-night trip to Jeollado and a shorter 1-night, 2-day getaway to Yeoju, and let me tell you, the mindset for preparing for each was completely different. Today, I’m going to compare these two real-life itineraries and highlight the key differences they offer as self-drive destinations.
Yeoju is incredibly accessible from Seoul. If traffic is clear, you can reach it in about an hour by taking the Yeongdong or Jungbu Naeryuk Expressways.
On the other hand, Jeollado, especially areas like Gangjin, is quite a trek. You're looking at roughly 227 miles and about 4 hours and 14 minutes of driving.
Just looking at those numbers, it’s clear these two destinations offer entirely different road trip experiences.
Yeoju is close enough for a spontaneous day trip, while Jeollado definitely warrants at least an overnight stay to make the driving worthwhile.
I drove myself on both trips, and thankfully, the weather was beautiful each time. Just watching the scenery pass by made the drives incredibly pleasant.
My Jeollado adventure was a 3-day, 2-night itinerary that involved driving through several regions: starting in Gangjin, then moving through Yeongam, Mokpo, Sinan, Gochang, and finally returning from Iksan. It was a true road trip where my car was my main mode of transport the entire time.
On the first day, I had lunch at the traditional Korean restaurant Yehyang in Gangjin, then headed to Gaudo Island to walk its scenic suspension bridge. I spent both nights at the Yeongsanjae Hanok Hotel in Yeongam.
Day two took me to Mokpo, where I enjoyed lunch at Myeonginjip. Afterward, I explored Sinan Purple Island and rode the Mokpo Marine Cable Car. For dinner, I savored Chinese food at Daemyeongchun and then compared two famous local bakeries (CLB Bakery and Koromabang Confectionery).
On the final day, I drove past the beautiful Gochang Green Barley Field before heading back from the Iksan National Museum. The distances between these regions were quite significant, making it an impossible itinerary to cover in a single day without a car.
Like Jeollado, I also drove to Yeoju. However, because the distance was much shorter, I took my time and only visited two main spots. Upon arrival, I had lunch at Bong Makguksu, then checked into the Yeoju Sunvalley Hotel for an overnight stay. The next morning, after checking out, I enjoyed a leisurely walk through King Sejong's Tomb before heading back to Seoul. The biggest difference was how little planning was needed for the itinerary.
Unlike Jeollado, where I had to meticulously plan each day’s route, the short distance to Yeoju meant I could be spontaneous without much regret. The drive itself wasn't stressful at all, and the clear weather made the passing scenery even more enjoyable.
If you have plenty of time and want to explore multiple regions and sights, Jeollado will be far more satisfying. Just be prepared for a long drive, and I recommend setting aside at least 3 days and 2 nights.
Conversely, if you only have a day or an overnight weekend trip, or if long drives aren't your thing, starting with a closer destination like Yeoju is a better bet. If I had planned a long-distance trip like Jeollado right from the start, I might have felt overwhelmed and kept postponing it.
For long-distance trips, it’s smart to plan your rest stops in advance and minimize your driving by using one accommodation as a central base. During my Jeollado trip, staying in Yeongam and venturing out to Mokpo and Sinan significantly reduced driving fatigue.
For shorter, nearby trips, avoid over-scheduling. Instead, pick one or two main spots, and fill the rest of your time spontaneously. In Yeoju, my only fixed plans were the hotel and King Sejong's Tomb, and that was enough for a fulfilling day.
If you’re planning your first road trip, I highly recommend checking the driving distance first and then planning your itinerary accordingly. For my distant Jeollado trip, I strategically grouped destinations around my accommodation, while for Yeoju, being closer, I traveled with much less rigid planning.
Understanding how the distance impacts your trip planning will make choosing your next road trip destination much easier.
Yeoju is approximately a 1-hour drive from Seoul via the Yeongdong Expressway or Jungbu Naeryuk Expressway when there's no traffic. For Gangjin in Jeollado, it's estimated to take about 4 hours and 14 minutes, covering a distance of approximately 365 km.
For the Jeollado trip, I stayed for two nights at the Yeongsanjae Hanok Hotel in Yeongam. The course started in Gangjin, went through Yeongam, Mokpo, Sinan, Gochang, and returned to Iksan.
In Yeoju, I had lunch at Bong Makguksu and stayed overnight at the Yeoju Sun Valley Hotel. The next morning, I took a walk at King Sejong's Royal Tomb.
