Exploring Japan's McDonald's Menu
Plus, How to Order Happy Meal Toys!
On a recent trip near Sapporo, Japan, my travel companions and I found ourselves in Asahikawa looking for a quick lunch. It was a weekend, and surprisingly, many restaurants closed their doors right after the main lunch rush.

With limited options, we decided to head to McDonald's, and to our pleasant surprise, it was an unexpectedly great choice! Japanese McDonald's offers unique burgers you won't find anywhere else, and the overall menu differs quite a bit from what you might be used to back home.

The particular McDonald's we visited was near Asahikawa Station, operating from 7 AM to midnight. What truly fascinated me was seeing McDelivery vehicles, which were actual cars, making their rounds!
The Menu

These images are from the official Japanese McDonald's website. While some items are familiar, you'll find signature Japanese-exclusive offerings like the Samurai Mac series.

The Samurai Mac series, often translated as 'Roasted Soy Sauce Egg Bacon Beef,' is a must-try!
We ordered one Aburi Shoyu-style Double Nikkuatsu Beef and one Aburi Shoyu-style Tamago Bacon Nikkuatsu Beef. The individual burgers were 580 yen and 570 yen, respectively, while the sets were 850 yen and 840 yen. These prices felt quite reasonable compared to McDonald's in other countries!
Happy Meal Fun

Just like in many other countries, McDonald's in Japan offers Happy Meals for kids. They frequently collaborate with popular Japanese anime and character franchises, releasing unique toys.
For August 2026, Pokémon toys were featured! There are no specific time restrictions for purchasing Happy Meals, and the base prices typically range from 510 yen to 540 yen.
How to Order

Ordering at a Japanese McDonald's is pretty straightforward and similar to what you'd find elsewhere.
If the restaurant has a self-order kiosk, you can easily place your order there. If not, simply look at the menu and tell the staff what you'd like. A little pointing and smiling goes a long way!
At the location I visited, we were given a number card to place on our table, and a staff member brought our food directly to us. However, I've heard that some locations require you to pick up your order at the counter, so it seems to vary by store.

The interior of the restaurant was clean and modern. It seemed to cater to families, as there were more tables for four or more people than for just two.
Our Burgers & Drinks

We opted to change both of our drinks to Melon Soda. It tastes like carbonated water mixed with melon-flavored candy, and it's surprisingly addictive!

The French fries were quite similar to what we get in the US, but with one noticeable difference: they seemed less greasy. They weren't soggy and felt lighter.

First up was the 'Aburi Shoyu-style Double Nikkuatsu Beef' – a bit of a mouthful, I know, but absolutely worth it! This burger features two beef patties, cheddar cheese, and a savory soy sauce-based dressing.
I was genuinely impressed by the quality and rich flavor of the beef. The slightly sweet sauce perfectly complemented the patties, making it a delicious choice.

Next, we tried the 'Aburi Shoyu-style Tamago Bacon Nikkuatsu Beef.' This burger comes with a beef patty, egg, bacon, fresh lettuce, and cheese.
The salty bacon combined with the egg created a harmonious flavor, and the sauce was just as delightfully sweet as in the double beef burger. Personally, I enjoyed this one even more than the Double Nikkuatsu Beef!

For a convenient and affordable meal during your Japan travels, McDonald's is a fantastic option. I highly recommend giving it a try – you might just discover a new favorite!
The McDonald's branch near Asahikawa Station operates from 7 AM to midnight (24:00).
The 'Aburi Shoyu-style Double Nikuatsu Beef' set is 850 yen. If ordered à la carte, it's 580 yen.
In August, Pokémon toys were released with Happy Meals. The basic price for a Happy Meal is 510 yen or 540 yen.
