Among these, if you ask which one is the most picturesque, Hongcheon Rest Stop on the Yangyang-bound side always springs to mind first.
The views from Hongcheon Rest Stop are truly a destination in themselves, offering such a healing and expansive feeling that truly opens your heart.
Recently, on a trip to Sokcho Beach, we encountered heavy traffic and decided to stop at Hongcheon Rest Stop (Yangyang Direction) for lunch and a quick break. I'm excited to share my honest review of our experience.

Located on the Seoul-Yangyang Expressway, this rest stop serves travelers heading from Seoul towards Yangyang.
While many people make their first stop at Gapyeong Rest Stop, Hongcheon Rest Stop (Yangyang Direction) is equally popular and can get incredibly busy.
(Seriously, it gets extremely crowded!)
Despite the rest stop's size, the parking spaces never seem ample, or at least they don't feel particularly generous. Even on a regular weekend (not even peak vacation season),
Hongcheon Rest Stop (Yangyang Direction) is always bustling with people, and finding a parking spot often feels like a challenge.
2. Hongcheon Rest Stop Amenities
Gas Station, EV Charging Station, Nursing Room
The gas station at Hongcheon Rest Stop (Yangyang Direction) is conveniently located near the exit. You'll also find the EV charging stations in the same area, so keep that in mind.
I spotted three EV charging stations situated to the right, facing the gas station. During peak times, these spots can fill up quickly, so it's always a good idea to plan your electric vehicle charging in advance.
The nursing room is tucked away at the very back of the indoor food court, just to the left of the convenience store.
Its cozy and private location means you might miss it if you're not looking carefully, but it offers a secure and comfortable space for parents.
3. Hongcheon Rest Stop Food & Dining
The dining options at Hongcheon Rest Stop (Yangyang Direction) are generally divided into outdoor stalls and an indoor food court.
Outside, you'll find classic rest stop favorites like hot bars, hot dogs, _sotteok-sotteok_ (skewered sausage and rice cakes), walnut cakes, toast, _tteokbokki_ (spicy rice cakes), corn on the cob, sausages, whole roasted potatoes, grilled dried squid, and various jerky snacks.
What was truly surprising was that even during the height of the summer vacation season, many of the outdoor food items were unavailable.
For instance, _tteokbokki_, corn, and whole roasted potatoes were all out of stock. This meant most people were only carrying hot bars or _sotteok-sotteok_, which led us to head indoors instead.
Inside, you'll find the food court, which is actually divided into two main sections.
One area is bright and well-ventilated with air conditioning, while the other is a warmer section near the main thoroughfare.
The indoor food court offers a variety of dishes, broadly categorized into Korean soups (like _gukbap_), ramen, and Western-style options. Ordering is convenient via self-service kiosks.
However, the main challenge was finding an available seat.
Once our orders were ready, most people found themselves standing awkwardly with their trays, waiting for a table to open up, often resulting in eating a lukewarm meal.
4. Conclusion
While Hongcheon Rest Stop (Yangyang Direction) is ideally located for a quick break when traveling to Gangwon-do, its relatively small size compared to the high volume of visitors means it's not always the most relaxing place to stop.
If you're not planning to have a full meal indoors, the beautiful scenery makes it a truly worthwhile stop for a leisurely break. I highly recommend visiting if you have some extra time to simply enjoy the surroundings.
