Hey there, fellow adventurers! It's Topy, your go-to for spontaneous trips and hidden gems .ᐟ
Today, I'm thrilled to share a post about one of my absolute favorite and most cherished spots:
Gwi Bin Banjeom, a truly authentic local eatery in Hongcheon.
This Chinese restaurant is a consistent favorite among Hongcheon locals and regulars.
Once you taste their food, you'll find yourself craving it constantly, which is why I always find myself heading back there whenever I get a chance ‼️
Gwi Bin Banjeom

I arrived just before the lunch rush on a weekday, and the place was already bustling, so I opted not to take photos of the interior!
Stepping inside, you're immediately greeted by that charming, old-school eatery vibe, giving off serious 'authentic restaurant' energy even before you've ordered, haha.

As soon as we sat down, I wasted no time ordering my absolute favorite Gukbap, along with Jjamjjamyeon (which lets you enjoy both Jjajangmyeon and Jjamppong!), and of course, a small order of Tangsuyuk – you just can't skip it!

I ordered the Jjamjjamyeon for my husband, who was visiting for the first time, so he could try both flavors, haha!

The Jjajangmyeon tastes exactly like the classic, old-school version, and the Jjamppong has a clean, refreshing flavor!

And then there's Gukbap – the signature dish of Gwi Bin Banjeom and my absolute favorite menu item!
Seriously, you absolutely cannot compare this Gukbap to the typical Jjamppong-bap or other rice-in-soup dishes you find at regular Chinese restaurants.
The broth is incredibly rich and deeply flavorful, packed with egg and generous ingredients, creating a profound umami taste that truly coats your palate.
If you love rich, hearty broths, you're guaranteed to fall in love with this authentic, fundamental flavor 😍

Anyone else prefer classic Tangsuyuk over the chewy glutinous rice version? (Me!)

There's absolutely no gamey smell or greasy flavor typical of pork; it's just pure, crispy, savory classic Tangsuyuk!
It has that nostalgic crispiness that's different from the glutinous rice Tangsuyuk so common these days, and I absolutely loved it 👍

If it's your first time visiting, I recommend trying the combination we had: one Gukbap, Jjamjjamyeon, and a small order of Tangsuyuk.
After tasting the Gukbap, my husband immediately said he'd order it next time!
If you love rich, hearty flavors, I strongly suggest going straight for the Gukbap (because after that, Jjamppong might taste a bit bland in comparison).
But if you go with my recommended combination, you can enjoy all the core menu items perfectly: the sweet and savory Jjajangmyeon, the spicy Jjamppong, the rich Gukbap, and the crispy Tangsuyuk! This is the way to go if you want to try a bit of everything!

For anyone in Hongcheon looking for a truly authentic local restaurant that won't disappoint, make sure to jot down Gwi Bin Banjeom.
The combination of a rich, deeply flavorful Gukbap and crispy, classic Tangsuyuk is an addictively delicious taste that you'll keep thinking about long after you've returned home!
