Usually, I'm not one to obsessively check the weather forecast before an international trip, even though I often write about travel. But for my recent Hokkaido adventure, I made an exception! It was my first time visiting during the summer, specifically in August, and I had absolutely no idea what to expect from Hokkaido's summer weather.

My research suggested that days would be warm and nights a bit chilly, so a light jacket or cardigan would be essential. Based on that, I packed clothes of moderate thickness, skipping the super-thin stuff. And guess what? It was still hot! I kept thinking, "This is just summer, I should've packed lighter!" However, after a rain shower, a cool breeze definitely swept in, making it feel much more refreshing. The ideal outfit for Hokkaido in summer is definitely a short-sleeved top paired with something light to throw on. If you tend to run hot, you might not even need the extra layer. But do be aware that after rain, the temperature can fluctuate quite a bit between day and night.

Temperatures generally hovered around 70-77°F (21-25°C), but the humidity was consistently high, often between 80-90%. On days it rained, it even spiked up to 96%! While it wasn't raining during my photos, it was often cloudy. Honestly, when the sun was out during the day, it felt pretty hot.

After the rain, Sapporo felt quite comfortable, but I found Otaru and Hakodate to be noticeably cooler, almost a bit chilly.

Before my trip, the forecast predicted rain for almost the entire duration, which made me a little nervous. Thankfully, it didn't rain too much overall. (Though in Otaru, I did get absolutely drenched... haha!)

But once the sun fully emerged... it got hot. I absolutely love strolling through local streets and soaking in the scenery, but doing that under the direct sun was quite challenging due to the heat. (At least the sky looked beautiful in photos!)

As evening approached, the climate became much more pleasant for a walk. I never felt truly cold, but when strong winds picked up, I definitely appreciated having a light layer to put on. Perhaps for Hokkaido's August weather, even that won't be necessary.

I also paused to enjoy some busking, as a familiar tune started playing. It actually felt like the first time I'd seen street performances in Hokkaido!

While many say Hokkaido's weather has significant daily temperature swings, I actually felt the biggest difference was day-to-day. You'll experience some genuinely hot days and then suddenly cooler, crisper ones.
