Hokkaido Rail Pass
My summer adventure to Hokkaido was sparked by a desire to explore Japan's stunning northern island. I journeyed to popular spots like Otaru and Noboribetsu, and even made it down to Hakodate. Once again, I was reminded just how pricey train travel can be in Japan!
Four years ago, back in 2022, on my very first visit, I opted for a full JR Rail Pass and explored every nook and cranny. I recall it costing around ~$173 back then. This time, however, I meticulously planned my destinations to ensure maximum efficiency. I was determined to find a more budget-friendly option!
This is the pass I ended up using, which was priced at about ~$50 at the time of my booking (note that prices can fluctuate). Most travelers typically visit Otaru and Noboribetsu (often taking a separate day tour to Furano), and covering both those destinations for this price felt like an absolute steal, especially considering Japan's notoriously high transportation costs. So, I booked it without hesitation.

Once you've made your booking, you'll receive a voucher with a QR code, just like the one pictured. You'll simply present this at the station to exchange it for your physical pass.

If you happen to have any Klook discount codes, this is a perfect opportunity to apply them for even more savings!
Even though Hakodate was on my itinerary, I calculated that buying individual tickets for that specific segment would be more economical than purchasing a comprehensive Hokkaido Rail Pass just to cover that one leg of the journey. I was all about finding the best value!

Upon landing at New Chitose Airport, simply follow the clear signs to the train station.

The directions are excellent, so you'll have no trouble finding your way.

Just present your voucher, complete any necessary paperwork, and you're good to go. During this process, I also purchased my separate train tickets for Hakodate:
Noboribetsu → Hakodate
Hakodate → New Chitose Airport
I bought two one-way tickets for these segments.

Goodness gracious... these tickets were surprisingly expensive! The total came to 14,980 JPY, which is approximately ~$93.
At that price, I started to wonder if it would have been more sensible to just purchase a 7-day Japan JR Pass for the Sapporo region and enjoy the freedom of unlimited travel!
The area pass I bought was only valid for 4 days, which meant my itinerary was quite rigid. If I wanted to spontaneously extend my stay somewhere, I couldn't.
This prompted me to conduct a thorough comparison.

At the time of my previous trip, a 5-day Hokkaido JR Pass was priced at around ~$119, and a 7-day pass was approximately ~$157. The Noboribetsu area pass itself was slightly different then, costing about ~$50.

When I first did the math, I thought the difference was quite small, maybe around ~$4. However, after recalculating with current exchange rates, the 7-day Hokkaido JR Pass is actually about ~$14 more expensive than combining the area pass with individual tickets (totaling ~$143 vs. ~$157). That's a more significant difference than I initially realized!
If maximizing value is your top priority, then opting for the area pass combined with individual tickets is likely your best bet.
However, if you prioritize flexibility and the convenience of spontaneous travel without a rigid itinerary, then purchasing a Japan JR Pass for the entire Hokkaido region might be more suitable for your 2026 trip. You can easily find it on Klook, or if KKday is your preferred platform, you can book it there.
Both platforms typically offer options to choose between a specific area pass or a full regional pass on a single page, making it easy to compare.
With my Hokkaido Rail Pass in hand, it was time to hop on board and start the journey!
You'll find a handy slot in front of your seat to tuck away your ticket (though it's not always strictly necessary to keep it there).

I grabbed some of my favorite snacks, like a milky soda and some gummies, and settled in to enjoy the incredible views outside the window.

Blue skies, winding train tracks,

Sweeping ocean vistas,

And vibrant green landscapes –
The journey truly flew by. Despite the costs, there's an undeniable charm to train travel in Japan, making it an enjoyable part of the overall adventure.
I've laid out the comparison between opting for an area-specific pass combined with individual tickets versus purchasing a full Hokkaido Rail Pass. Ultimately, the best choice depends on your personal travel style and priorities for your 2026 Hokkaido trip!
The specific area pass covering Otaru and Noboribetsu mentioned in the article costs ~$50. With this amount, you can cover both Otaru and Noboribetsu.
The two individual tickets from Noboribetsu to Hakodate and from Hakodate to New Chitose Airport cost ~$93. This was approximately ~$93 at current exchange rates, and was calculated to be about ~$14 cheaper than the Sapporo JR Pass 7-day pass (~$157).
The specific area pass mentioned in the article is a 4-day pass. Its disadvantage is that the itinerary is fixed, so you cannot stay longer in other places even if you wish to.
When you make a reservation, you will receive a voucher with a QR code. You can exchange it at New Chitose Airport by presenting the voucher as instructed and filling out any required forms.
