My most anticipated hot spring trip in Sapporo!
When thinking of ryokans, people usually look towards Jozankei,
but most one-night stays were pretty expensive, around ~$276.
Then I found a ryokan in the ~$138 range that was both affordable and high-quality,
Hatakoya Jozankei Shoten!
Even better, at its lowest price,
you can even get it for as low as the upper ~$60s.

I booked a twin room including breakfast and dinner
for ~$173 per night during the July peak season.
I always find the best hotel deals on Agoda!

Shuttle Bus
Ryokans in Jozankei aren't accessible by subway,
so most people either take the free shuttle bus provided by the accommodation
or a regular public bus.
You need to call the accommodation in advance to book the shuttle bus.
Just call the number below, tell them your booking date and name,
and say you'd like to use the free bus.
They understood everything even when I spoke in English!

The boarding spot is exactly here, in front of this red mailbox.
The journey takes about 40 minutes. We board at 5 PM when going there,
and for returning to Sapporo city center, we board at 12:45 PM.
By the way, there's a convenience store called Seicomart inside the building.
Since the accommodation and convenience store are a bit of a 15-minute walk apart,
it's a good idea to buy some snacks here in advance.
Check-in
There were two staff members assisting with check-in.
The male staff member wasn't fluent in English or Korean,
so he diligently explained everything using a translation app for each step.
Since it's not yet widely known among Koreans,
it seemed like they hadn't implemented full Korean language support yet, but they were very friendly,
and with the translation app, there were absolutely no issues with checking in.
He seemed to find this hard to explain, so he told me to use a translator, lol.
I took a photo with Papago and found out it was about choosing amenities.
If you don't choose too many items here, they give you coins!
Since we didn't need any of them, we didn't take anything,
so my husband and I each received a coin! 💙
You can put them into the gachapon machine in the lobby and spin it.
My husband got a day-use bath invitation ticket,
and I got a coupon for one draft beer!
I was wondering what the bath invitation ticket was for,
but the staff member kindly exchanged it for a ping-pong table usage ticket.
Honestly, we didn't really need that either... haha.
Lounge
The lounge has several sofas and tables,
and board games are also available!
There's an iMac available, so you can easily get online!
Twin Room
Even though the twin room I booked was the most affordable option, it came with two large, double-sized beds, and the room itself was surprisingly spacious, unlike many typical accommodations in Japan!
I originally wanted to book a traditional Japanese tatami room, but it turned out to be a bit pricier. Besides this, they also offer dormitory rooms and rooms with private baths!
I took a video to give you a full feel for the room's ambiance!
Outside, you'll find a stunning mountain view! It was a bit cloudy on the day we visited, which was a shame, but still beautiful!
There's no separate shower room, but you'll find a washbasin and toilet separately. Not having a shower room wasn't inconvenient at all, especially since we fully enjoyed the hot springs instead!
In the shoe cabinet, you'll find comfy slippers perfect for heading to the hot springs or going for a meal!
Other amenities include a TV, refrigerator, safe, and an air purifier.
In the closet, you'll find towels, a hairdryer, and comfy loungewear perfect for relaxing. Just a heads-up: there are no towels provided at the onsen, so remember to bring yours!
I wore them comfortably when heading to the onsen or for dinner. They might not be stylish, but they're incredibly cozy! Haha.
The Onsen (Hot Springs)
You'll find the hot springs located straight past the lobby on the first floor.
There's a dry sauna and three indoor baths, including a cold plunge, plus an amazing outdoor rotemburo (open-air bath)! Even though it was a rainy day, it made for such a atmospheric and enjoyable experience, so the outdoor bath was my absolute favorite.
Welcome Drink
When you check in, they'll give you a welcome drink coupon! You can redeem it at the sake store located on the way to the hot springs.
For drinks, you can choose between coffee, tea, and sake,
and for dessert, they give you pudding.
Sake isn't really my cup of tea,
so I regretted not choosing coffee,
but my husband said it was incredibly clean and delicious.
And that pudding? It's seriously good..
If they sold it at Japanese convenience stores,
I'd want to bring a huge stash back to Korea!
Dinner
At Hatagoya Jozankei Shoten, they serve yakiniku for dinner.
Since there aren't many suitable places to eat around Jozankei,
I highly recommend booking your stay with dinner included if possible.
For around ~$138, it includes dinner and breakfast, so
not only is it great value for money, but the meat quality is also fantastic❤
There are private seating areas,
and also open lounge-style seating.
For alcoholic drinks or other beverages, you can order and pick them up from
the sake store where we got our welcome drink earlier.
We got one draft beer using a voucher we won from the gacha machine,
and ordered another one.
Payment isn't made at this time; you settle everything
all at once when you check out. Credit card payment is accepted.
An amazing 6-tier yakiniku set!
The meat quality was excellent, and though it might look small in the pictures,
the portion was actually quite generous. Two adults couldn't finish it all,
leaving a little bit behind.
You can grab rice and kimchi from the self-service bar.
Since it was such a great value stay, I honestly didn't have high expectations for dinner, but
to think it was *this* good! If I ever come back to Jozankei,
I'll absolutely stay here again.
For dessert, they serve something called Annin Dofu, or apricot kernel tofu.
You can pick it up at the sake store, just like the dinner.
It was incredibly jiggly, but honestly, it wasn't quite my cup of tea.
It was a bit like... eating cosmetics?
Definitely a flavor that divides opinions!
Breakfast
Here's a look at the breakfast I enjoyed the next morning.
You get to eat in the same charming space, and for the main dish,
you can choose between a comforting curry or a delicious porridge.
The curry was dependably tasty and satisfying.
Pretty great for a breakfast!
The self-service bar offers a delightful spread, including fresh salad, steamed potatoes, cheese, miso soup,
and refreshing orange juice.
After a relaxing morning coffee and one last dip in the onsen,
it was time to catch the shuttle bus back to Sapporo.
Starting the last day of our trip completely refreshed and rejuvenated,
I was incredibly satisfied with Hatagoya Jozankei Shoten Hostel.
From the amazing hospitality to the fair price, comfy rooms, and incredible onsen, there was absolutely nothing not to love!
It truly was the best accommodation.

The shuttle bus departs from in front of the red mailbox at Showa Building, located at Odori Nishi 5-chome, Sapporo. It takes approximately 40 minutes to Sapporo city center.
The bus departs from Sapporo for the ryokan at 5:00 PM, and from the ryokan back to Sapporo city center at 12:45 PM. To reserve the shuttle bus, simply call the accommodation (+81-1159-82929), provide your reservation date and name, and request the free bus service.
During the peak season in July, a twin room including breakfast and dinner was available for ~$173 per night. You can book for as low as ~$124 through Agoda, with prices typically in the ~$138 range, and sometimes even as low as the late ~$69s.
Towels are not provided separately at the hot springs, so please bring the towels available in your room's closet.
Dinner consists of a 6-tier yakiniku set. Rice and kimchi can be taken from the self-service bar. Alcohol and beverages can be ordered and picked up at the sake store located on the way to the hot springs, and payment can be made all at once at checkout.
