There are a handful of Chinese restaurants near Harvard, but Dumpling House is by far the most reliable, budget-friendly, and comforting spot. Their spicy Sichuan-style fish dish left such an impression on me last year that I had to visit again this year!

As you stroll through Harvard Square, one of the most eye-catching spots you'll encounter is Tatte Bakery & Cafe. It's a beloved local chain with several locations across the Boston area.
• Location Highlight: It boasts an unbeatable location just a 1-minute walk from Harvard Yard—literally right across the street.
• Quick Tip: As one of Harvard Square's signature cafes, it's always bustling with both students and travelers. My child, who goes to school here, often hangs out here with friends. With an array of pastries, great coffee, and a solid brunch menu, it's the perfect spot to grab a bite or take a relaxing break in the middle of your walking tour.

Boston's weather can be quite unpredictable, even in May and June. While a sunny afternoon might call for short sleeves, a sudden breeze or cloudy sky can make it chilly enough to pull out a light puffer jacket. After a long day of walking around Harvard Yard and Harvard Square, we were craving a warm bowl of soup, which led us straight to this spot.
• Highlights: Located close to Harvard Square, this is a beloved Vietnamese spot where students frequently dine. When we visited, the place was filled with local residents and students enjoying their meals.
• Quick Tip: The signature pho, with its rich broth and generous portions, makes for an incredibly satisfying and hearty meal. After eating mostly heavy, greasy foods during my US travels, having a hot bowl of soup really hit the spot and settled my stomach. The spices aren't overwhelming at all, making it super approachable and comforting, and they offer plenty of other options besides pho if you're visiting with a group.

Joe's Pizza
If you're looking for a quick, delicious bite during your Harvard campus tour, I highly recommend Joe's Pizza. It's a famous pizza brand that started in New York, but you can enjoy it right here in Harvard Square.
• Hours: Open until 2:00 AM on weekdays, and until 3:00 AM on Fridays and Saturdays.
• Quick Tip: Some students even say this location is better than the original in New York! Since you can order by the slice, it's super easy to grab a quick bite on the go. The thin, crispy crust topped with fresh ingredients was absolutely delicious. Because they stay open so late, it's a favorite late-night study break spot for local students.
A Must-Try Boston Dessert: Cannoli at
Mike's Pastry
If you're looking for a sweet treat after your meal, you can't miss Mike's Pastry. Their signature cannolis are practically legendary and stand as one of Boston's most iconic desserts.
• Highlights: The original location in the North End (Boston's Little Italy) is a tiny, cash-only takeout spot that almost always has a massive line. Luckily, the Harvard Square location lets you skip the long waits and even features indoor seating so you can enjoy your treat right there.
• Quick Tip: If you have a sweet tooth, this is an absolute must-visit. Just looking at the endless rows of colorful pastries is half the fun! With that crispy pastry shell loaded with rich, sweet filling, you'll instantly understand why these are crowned as Boston's signature dessert. If you find yourself craving something sweet and refreshing after your meal, J.P. Licks is the place to be. As Boston's signature homegrown ice cream brand, it's right in the center of Harvard Square and super easy to spot.
• Highlights: They offer an impressive lineup of over 40 creative ice cream flavors—including great vegan and dairy-free/lactose-free options—along with various frozen yogurts.
• Quick Tip: Keep an eye out for their featured flavor of the month—it's always fun to try something new! Beyond ice cream, they also serve up rich cold brew and homemade yogurt drinks that are huge hits with local students. It's the perfect spot to grab a seat, relax, and enjoy a sweet break while wandering around Harvard Square.

If you're looking to unwind with a relaxed evening after finishing your Harvard tour, Aeronaut Brewing Company is an amazing choice.
• Location & Vibes: It's about a 30-minute walk from the heart of Harvard Square, but the reward is huge. You'll get to sample a fantastic variety of locally crafted beers in a vibrant space loved by neighborhood locals.
• Quick Tip: If you time it right, you can catch live music performances too! It's a great way to experience authentic Boston local culture away from the typical tourist trails. I highly recommend dropping by in the evening to unwind with a cold pint, wash away the day's travel fatigue, and dive straight into Boston's thriving craft brewery scene.
Exploring the area with an actual Harvard student made me realize that the vibe of the college town of Cambridge is felt much more deeply in the spots where students actually eat, grab coffee, and hang out, rather than just the typical tourist landmarks.
