Boston's North End is one of the oldest residential areas in America. Little Italy, steeped in the history of Italian immigrants, was a neighborhood brimming with delicious restaurants, cafes, and dessert shops, making it a delightful dilemma to choose where to go.
Among them, I visited Neptune Oyster to try Boston's iconic lobster roll and fresh New England oysters.
Even though I arrived right at opening, I waited for over an hour to finally savor the dishes at Boston's famous Neptune Oyster. I'll share a vivid account of their menu and some waiting tips with you.
Tips for Weekday Lunch Walk-in Waiting

Neptune Oyster doesn't take reservations; it's a popular spot where you absolutely have to walk in and wait, so I made an 'open run' (arrived right at opening). Even though I got there just as they opened at 11 AM, there were already many people waiting ahead of me. They don't have a system for taking numbers or leaving your contact information; you have to physically stand in line to wait. This actually made it less boring, as we could take turns exploring the alleys, grocery stores, and shops of Little Italy while waiting.
The North End is also a key part of tour routes for exploring Boston's historic sites on foot. I've detailed the route I walked after my meal at Neptune Oyster in the post below.
When it was finally my turn to enter, I saw that the restaurant was quite cozy, with not many internal seats, and meal times tended to be long, so the turnover wasn't quick. That's why even though I arrived right at opening, I still had to wait for over an hour.
Given this many people waiting on a weekday, I figured that weekends could mean even longer waits. If you want to minimize your waiting time, I recommend arriving at least 30 minutes before opening, or aiming for an off-peak, late afternoon hour.
Boston's North End Little Italy Hotspot,
Neptune Oyster Restaurant Atmosphere

Neptune Oyster is a quintessential Boston seafood restaurant, consistently featured in various media outlets including the 2025 Michelin Guide selection, The New York Times, Boston Magazine, Food & Wine, Eater, and Bon Appétit.
It's considered the North End's premier spot, where both locals and travelers queue up to savor their lobster rolls and fresh oysters. Indeed, on the day I visited, the line started forming even before opening, and by the time I finished my meal and left, there were significantly more people waiting.

Located in the heart of the North End, amidst a charming stretch of red-brick buildings, Neptune Oyster blended perfectly with the ambiance of Little Italy. Inside, it was a modest space, yet vibrant with customers filling every seat. In the open kitchen, staff bustled, preparing fresh seafood. Watching them through the shop window while waiting even made the wait feel fascinating.

Recommended Menu and Prices

We were guided to bar seating, and it was fantastic to directly witness the preparation of seafood, including the fresh oysters we had seen while waiting. After such a long wait, as soon as we sat down, we promptly ordered Neptune Oyster's signature dishes.
We chose the lobster roll, warm clam chowder, and fresh seasonal oysters, adding an octopus dish (Octopus) on the manager's recommendation. The prices are somewhat on the higher side, as expected for a restaurant dealing with fresh New England seafood, but considering Boston's dining costs and the quality and freshness of the food served, it was certainly reasonable.

A Warm Lobster Roll Bursting with Buttery Flavor

For lobster rolls, you can usually choose between a cold mayonnaise-based sauce or a warm butter sauce. We went with the warm 'Hot Lobster Roll'! As for sides, we had the option of a salad or French fries, so we ordered one of each to try them both.
Imagine plump, succulent lobster meat generously packed between soft, fluffy bread. With just one bite, a rich, savory butter aroma filled my senses, followed by the lobster's natural sweet and savory notes dancing on my palate. It truly was a match made in heaven with the bread's tender texture!
The price of lobster rolls can fluctuate with the market, but when I visited, it was $43. Honestly, every dollar was worth it for how delicious it was! If you're ever exploring Boston, I highly recommend giving this a try.
Clam Chowder: A Velvety Broth Brimming with Clams

Neptune Oyster's clam chowder truly stood out, perfectly balancing the inherent creaminess with the deep, rich flavor of the clam broth. Rather than the thick and heavy style, it was wonderfully lighter, clean, and incredibly refreshing. It was generously filled with chewy clam meat and tenderly cooked potatoes, and the seasoning was surprisingly subtle and clean, making it a delightful experience for any palate.
Spanish Octopus Dish, Enhanced with Romesco Sauce

Following a recommendation, I tried the Spanish octopus dish, and it was a delightful surprise, exceeding all expectations! It was perfectly grilled to a crisp on the outside, while remaining incredibly tender on the inside – absolutely no chewiness here. With every bite, a wave of savory umami flavor emerged. Served with an almond-infused Romesco sauce and a drizzle of Espelette oil, it was wonderfully savory and fragrant.
A Diverse Selection of Fresh Oysters from Across Various US Regions

True to its reputation as an oyster haven, the freshness of the raw oysters was absolutely outstanding! They provide a separate order sheet for oysters, and I discovered that the variety and price differ based on their origin. You can order them individually to sample a range, and the order sheet even includes brief descriptions of each oyster's characteristics, making it incredibly easy to choose.
While I'm not personally a huge oyster fan, my family members dove right in and happily reported back! They mentioned that each oyster had subtle differences in flavor depending on its origin, and they were all thrilled with how incredibly fresh they were, completely free of any fishy notes.
They also served special cocktail sauce and mignonette sauce alongside, which my family claimed truly brought out the oysters' amazing flavors! 🤗
After our incredibly satisfying meal, we transitioned to another charming part of Boston – a picturesque red-brick neighborhood where we savored the tranquil scenery. For more delightful tales of beautiful alleyways brimming with local charm, be sure to check out the post below!
