The library I visited to capture photos of the 2026 Harvard Commencement
I recently attended the 2026 Harvard University Commencement. It was the day my child’s years of hard work finally paid off, making it an incredibly special and priceless moment for me as a proud mom. Hoping to snag a prime spot with a clear view of the main stage, I rushed out at the crack of dawn. But when I arrived at the gate, a massive crowd of families was already lined up ahead of me! Seeing that sight instantly made me realize the sheer scale and electric energy of a Harvard graduation.
I’m excited to share the vibrant, festival-like atmosphere of the big day, along with the behind-the-scenes stories of our early-morning hustle.
Harvard Commencement Lines and Entry Guidelines
Families and guests waiting from the crack of dawn to enter the graduation ceremonyMap of Harvard Yard and gate numbers
We had to start early on graduation morning. While the main ceremony wasn't scheduled until 9:30 AM, the gates to Harvard Yard opened at 6:45 AM. On top of that, all guests were required to be seated by 8:30 AM, so we definitely had to hustle in the early hours.
I got to our gate around 6:10 AM, and oh my goodness—even at that hour, the line already stretched back over 50 meters! I couldn't help but laugh, thinking that if getting into and surviving this school is famously competitive, even getting into the graduation ceremony is a challenge of its own!🤗
There are several gates leading into the campus, and we entered through Gate G. As soon as the gates opened at 6:45 AM, we rushed in and secured our seats by around 6:50 AM. Having scoped out the location while taking photos around campus the day before turned out to be an absolute lifesaver!
Harvard University Commencement tickets and event programs
Each graduating student is allotted only 2 tickets for the ceremony. If you have a larger family and need extras like we did, you have to reach out to other students whose families can't make it to see if they have any spares.
Actually, when I happened to visit the campus on graduation day last year, I didn't have tickets, so I couldn't go inside. I could only wander around the perimeter and enter Harvard Yard after the ceremony was over. Coming back just one year later as a parent of a graduate, holding my own ticket, felt incredibly special and emotional. If you're curious about what the Harvard Commencement looks like from the outside without tickets, or want to read about my campus tour experience, check out my previous post below!
Harvard Yard entry after strict security checks / Guidelines on allowed bag sizes
The security screening to enter Harvard Yard was surprisingly strict. Since it’s an event where massive crowds gather, non-ticket holders were strictly barred from entering, and ticket scanning and bag checks were conducted simultaneously at the entrance. Even if you stepped out for just a moment, you had to have your ticket scanned on the way out to be allowed back in.
In particular, only small bags measuring 12x12x12 inches or less were allowed inside. Backpacks and large bags were strictly prohibited, so I made sure to pack only the absolute essentials in a tiny bag.
Harvard Commencement Seating Chart & the Best Spots to Sit
Seats in front of the library with a view of the main stage / Guest seating set up the day before the ceremony
The main stage for the graduation was set up right in front of Harvard’s iconic landmark, The Harry Elkins Widener Memorial Library. The area directly in front of the stage was reserved for the graduates, while guest seating was arranged right behind them.
We were lucky enough to grab seats near the front of the library steps, which gave us a view of the main stage from a distance. Although the stage looked quite small from where we sat, massive screens were set up throughout the Yard, allowing us to watch every moment in vivid detail.
The vast Harvard Yard packed to the brim with families and well-wishers
Seeing the massive Harvard Yard completely filled with students, families, and guests was an absolutely breathtaking sight. It turns out that wanting a great seat is a universal human trait! As soon as the gates opened, people from all over the world, including locals, sprinted to claim spots and saved chairs with their personal belongings while waiting for their families—a heartwarming and familiar sight to see.
Water stations set up all over Harvard Yard
The day started off with clear blue skies, but as noon approached, thick clouds rolled in and the temperature dropped quite a bit. Sitting outdoors for hours made me regret not bringing a warm jacket. To top it off, we got hit with a heavy downpour during the degree conferral in the afternoon, making for some truly dramatic weather!
As for amenities, several buildings within the Yard were open to the public so we could use the restrooms easily, and water stations were conveniently located throughout the area to keep everyone hydrated.
The Bagpipe Marching Band and
The Heartwarming Commencement Speech by Conan O'Brien
Graduates marching to the sound of bagpipesGraduates gathering by department to enter Harvard Yard
Before the ceremony kicked off, the graduates began entering together by major. Watching the students march proudly behind a marching band dressed in traditional Scottish attire, playing the bagpipes, truly brought a lump to my throat.
Conan O'Brien delivering the commencement address at the 2026 Harvard University Graduation
The absolute highlight of this commencement was undoubtedly the speech by television host Conan O'Brien. As a Harvard alumnus himself, the moment he was introduced, the crowd erupted into deafening cheers and applause. With his signature wit and sharp comedy, he captivated the audience while hilariously satirizing some of the absurdities of modern society. Yet beneath the jokes lay a heavy layer of sincerity; he emphasized that humility is far more important than mere success and warmly urged everyone to look around and keep a sense of community close to their hearts.
Conan O'Brien’s deeply moving and inspiring commencement speech
There was one line in particular that resonated so deeply with me, and I still can't get it out of my head.
"Do not let your Harvard degree be the last thing people learn about you. Go out into the world, and through your humility and real achievements, make 'going to Harvard' the least important fact about your life."
This message—to not rest on the laurels of a university title, but to prove yourself through inner strength—resonated deeply not just with the graduates, but with all of us striving through our daily lives.

Moments of Pure Happiness

The main joint ceremony at Harvard Yard wrapped up around noon. After that, everyone moved to their respective designated department venues to enjoy a prepared lunch, followed by the individual diploma ceremonies in the afternoon. By the time the entire schedule wrapped up, it was around 4:00 PM.
Breakfast provided for graduates and their familiesLunch provided for families during the all-day event
At my child's department, the Harvard Graduate School of Design (GSD), they provided a light continental breakfast for those who rushed out early in the morning, and neatly packed sandwich boxes for lunch. It made enjoying meals with the family completely hassle-free!
A puppy that came along to celebrate with its owner
One thing that stood out to me during the graduation was how many families brought their pet dogs! If I’d known, I would’ve brought our puppy along too—it made me miss our youngest furry family member back home in Korea so much. Seeing cute dogs dressed up in adorable matching Harvard gear, posing for photos with their owners against the backdrop of the campus, was such a heartwarming sight.
The peaceful Harvard Yard before and after the ceremony
Instead of a solemn and stiff academic ceremony, the Harvard University graduation felt like the entire campus had transformed into one massive festival. Experiencing everything firsthand—from the early morning queues to Conan O'Brien's speech—it became clear why people from all over the world find this commencement so special.
The eyes of the families watching their loved ones reap the sweet rewards of their hard work were filled with so much pride and joy. It was truly a festival where everyone came together to celebrate happiness. Wishing my child all the best on this exciting new chapter, I'll wrap up my story of this deeply moving Harvard graduation here.
