Hanoi's Rainy Season

When it rains in Hanoi, it can come down quite a bit. However, these are typically tropical squalls, so if you wait them out, they usually pass. From my experience visiting various cities across Vietnam, it feels like Hanoi's downpours tend to last a bit longer than in other regions once they start.

During my recent 5-night, 7-day trip, I only encountered one instance of heavy rain. Another time, I grabbed my umbrella expecting a shower that never materialized, and the rest of the time was surprisingly dry.

Hanoi's rainy season runs from May through September, with the remaining months being dry. A big plus during the wet season is the frequent cloud cover, which means the sun isn't constantly beating down. While it's certainly warm, the reduced direct sunlight makes exploring a bit more comfortable and lessens the worry about sunburn. (Of course, that doesn't mean it's cool – walking around, you'll definitely feel the heat!)

This was about as bright and sunny as it got during my visit.

In July, Hanoi's temperatures typically hover between 80-95°F (27-35°C). While these numbers might seem manageable, the actual felt temperature is often much hotter due to the oppressive humidity. The air feels thick and sticky.

Southern Vietnamese cities like Ho Chi Minh City, Nha Trang, Da Nang, and Phu Quoc would likely be even more sweltering in July, so being in the northern part of the country like Hanoi offers a slight reprieve.

Hanoi's weather in August is quite similar to July. Looking at the temperature ranges, it might even feel a touch less sweltering.

I've seen fellow travel bloggers and influencers who fell in love with Vietnam get more sun-kissed than the locals! To avoid that, I usually try to cover up as much as the locals do.

However, days of consistently overcast skies slowly lulled me into a false sense of security.

Eventually, I got lazy, only applying sunscreen to my face....

Then, on the final day,

My previously covered skin was suddenly exposed. While the clear skies were a welcome change from the dreary ones, I still regretted not being better prepared.
