after being featured on hit Korean travel shows.
When planning a trip to Sapa, the very first thing you'll probably scratch your head over
is how to actually get there.
The most popular ways to make the journey
are by train, sleeping bus, and luxury limousine van.
These three are the top choices for travelers.

Where is Sapa Located? |
Sapa is nestled in northern Vietnam,
roughly 300 km (about 186 miles) away from Hanoi.
Since the closest international airport to Sapa
is actually Hanoi's Noi Bai International Airport,
it's safe to say there are no airports nearby.
Because of this, most travelers fly into Hanoi's Noi Bai Airport first,
then transfer to another mode of transport
to make their way to Sapa.

According to Google Maps, the journey from Hanoi to Sapa
is about 300 km,
and taking a car will take roughly 5 to 6 hours.
👉 It's quite a long journey, so
depending on how you choose to travel,
your budget and fatigue levels can vary wildly.
How to Get from Hanoi to Sapa:
Train, Sleeping Bus, or Limousine
There are three main ways
to travel from Hanoi to Sapa.

The Train
One classic option is taking the overnight sleeper train,
made famous by several hit travel shows.
You'll depart from Hanoi Station
and ride all the way to Lao Cai Station.
From there, you'll need to catch a shuttle or a Grab
for an extra hour to actually get into Sapa.
While booking a sleeper cabin lets you
snooze your way through the night journey,
the overall travel time is quite long, and the extra transfer
can be a bit of a hassle.

is incredibly popular among travelers,
booking early is an absolute must once your dates are set!

Sleeper Bus
Out of all the ways to get from Hanoi to Sapa,
the most budget-friendly and common option
is taking a sleeper bus.
Since you travel in lie-flat bed-style seats,
it's slightly faster than the train and takes you
straight to Sapa without any transfers.
Depending on the bus company,
the quality and condition of the vehicle can vary quite a bit.
If you end up on an older bus,
the musty smells or bumpy ride
might make the journey a little rough.

Just like the train, prices
can vary based on the date and class of the bus,
so keep that in mind!

Limousine Van
The option I actually chose was the limousine van.
I used it to travel to Sapa
after spending a night in Hanoi's Old Quarter.
Living up to the name "Limousine," the seats are super comfortable.
If you want an extra comfy ride,
I highly recommend choosing the VIP seats (middle row) when booking.
The front seat next to the driver or the very back row
can be relatively cramped and uncomfortable.
The travel time is a bit faster than the larger buses,
and the best part was the convenient hotel-to-hotel pick-up and drop-off service.
If you're in the Hanoi Old Quarter,
they'll pick you up right from your hotel door,
and once you arrive in Sapa,
they'll drop you off right in front of your accommodation.
Not having to drag heavy luggage
to a busy station or terminal
was a massive game-changer!

Shared Limousine Transfer between Sapa and Hanoi - Klook
You will travel by train from Hanoi Station to Lao Cai Station for about 7 hours, and then take a shuttle or Grab for an additional hour. The total travel time is about 8 hours, and you must make a transfer in between to reach Sapa.
The one-way ticket for a sleeping bus starts from ~$13, making it the cheapest among the three transportation options. The advantage is that you can travel directly to Sapa without transferring, but the downside is that the condition of the bus can vary greatly depending on the company and the age of the vehicle.
When booking a limousine, it is most comfortable to choose the VIP seats located in the middle. It is recommended to avoid the seats next to the driver or the ones in the very back, as they can be relatively uncomfortable.
