Hanoi-Sapa Sleeping Train Review 2026: Klook Booking & Discounts
Discover the magic of the Hanoi-Sapa sleeping train in 2026! Learn how to book, save with Klook discounts, and enjoy a romantic, overnight journey to Vietnam's stunning Sapa region.

Hey there, fellow adventurers! It's Moarang, and I'm excited to share my recent solo trip to Sapa, Vietnam, focusing on my experience booking and riding the Hanoi-Sapa sleeping train.
I recently explored Hanoi and Sapa in April 2026, and I opted for a night sleeping train to get from Hanoi to Sapa. For my return journey from Sapa back to Hanoi Airport, I chose a sleeping bus. (Full disclosure: I used discount coupons for both train and bus bookings!)
I'll walk you through where and how I made my reservations, how I snagged those discounts, and my personal insights from the journey.
Why I Chose the Train for Hanoi to Sapa

The journey from Hanoi to Sapa spans approximately 186 miles (300 km) and can take over 6 hours by road. While buses are a popular option, I decided on the train for three key reasons:
✅ First, Safety
Trains offer a more stable and predictable mode of transport, less affected by road conditions. Buses, especially on mountainous routes, can sometimes face delays due to unforeseen circumstances like landslides. Given that I was traveling at night, the train felt like a safer bet.
✅ Second, Save on Accommodation
Departing around 10 PM and arriving the next morning meant I could travel while I slept. This was a fantastic way to save both a night's accommodation cost and precious daylight travel time.
✅ Third, A Touch of Romance
There's an undeniable charm to traversing Vietnam's scenic mountainous railways that a bus simply can't replicate. I'd seen pictures and videos of the Sapa sleeping train, and the idea of that unique, nostalgic experience really sealed the deal for me!
How to Book Your Sleeping Train Ticket
I made my booking through Klook, which made the process incredibly smooth.

On the Klook booking page, you'll find three main train operators:
✔️ Chapa Express
✔️ Damitrans Express
✔️ King Sapa Train
After some deliberation, I chose King Sapa Train, primarily for its ambiance. While Chapa Express offers a more modern and sleek style, King Sapa's rich wooden interiors gave off serious 'Hogwarts Express' vibes, which I absolutely loved.
It was also slightly more affordable than Chapa, offering a great balance of value and atmosphere.
You can choose between shared 4-berth cabins or private 2-berth cabins. Since I was traveling with my mom, we opted for the private cabin for more comfort and privacy.

Why a Private Cabin Was a Game Changer
Booking a private cabin felt like a VIP experience. We had access to a dedicated lounge before boarding, where we could relax comfortably. When it was time to board, a staff member personally escorted us to our cabin.

Not having to share a room with strangers and being able to lock our door from the inside provided great peace of mind regarding our belongings.

The cabin itself was surprisingly comfortable and clean. The bedding felt fresh, and we were provided with bottled water, some simple snacks, a beer, a banana, and a disposable toothbrush set.
Each bunk also had a power outlet, so charging our phones overnight was no issue at all! :)

Each train car typically has five cabins,

and at one end, there's a restroom with a sink,

with another sink area at the opposite end. This setup meant we rarely had to wait, and the facilities were kept reasonably clean.

Just a heads-up: train noise can be quite noticeable, so if you're a light sleeper, definitely use the earplugs provided!
My Onboard Experience
Our train departed from Hanoi Station at 10 PM.
For the first 20-30 minutes, the train slowly rolls through Hanoi city. It was a fun experience to see tourists outside waving at the train, and we waved back! It truly felt like a romantic start to our adventure.

After leaving the city, it gets dark quickly, so there isn't much to see. We bought some instant noodles from the cart before departure, enjoyed them with our complimentary canned beer, and then settled in for the night.

Around 6:20 AM, about 30-40 minutes before arriving at Lao Cai Station, a staff member came around to gently knock on our door and wake us up. It was super convenient not having to set an alarm! :)
Oh, and one quick note: before the train departs at night, they'll ask if you want coffee in the morning. Just remember it's not complimentary!

It's important to remember that the sleeping train's final stop isn't Sapa itself, but Lao Cai Station.
From Lao Cai Station, you'll need to travel another hour (roughly 20 miles) by car to reach Sapa town.

To avoid the hassle of negotiating taxi fares early in the morning, I pre-booked a shuttle bus option from Lao Cai to Sapa when I made my Klook reservation.

After getting off the train and exiting the station, I found a staff member holding a sign with my name on it.
It took a little time to spot them amidst the crowd, but once I did, I was whisked away in a comfortable minivan directly to my Sapa hotel, which I had specified during booking.
Starting my Sapa adventure without any taxi haggling or stress was incredibly convenient and highly recommended!
