Workation Vibes
While it would be wonderful if all cafes met the same criteria, for someone like me – not quite a full-time digital nomad, but often needing to get work done while traveling abroad – cafes fall into three distinct categories.
First, there are the places that truly match my taste. When I'm exploring Vietnam, I'm drawn to those hidden gems tucked away in narrow alleys, steering clear of generic franchises.
Second, there are the Instagram-worthy spots – beautiful, photogenic places that everyone generally loves. I don't go out of my way for these, but I'll visit if they happen to align with my first preference.
Finally, there are the cafes I choose specifically for work. In Ho Chi Minh City, where I often visit, I have my go-to "secret hideout" cafes in almost every district. Even in Da Nang, a city I rarely frequent, I've managed to find a few. But Hanoi? Until recently, it was a challenge. Now, I've finally discovered some fantastic spots.
When it comes to a good work cafe, I look for a few specific things (and personally, I avoid franchises, especially when I'm traveling internationally). I prefer local cafes, but not ones that are too tiny. They need to be a decent size but not overly crowded. Crucially, the internet speed needs to be fast, though, honestly, most places in Vietnam offer excellent connectivity, so it's rarely a major concern.
(Interestingly, the cafe I picked for work actually had separate 5G Wi-Fi available – a pleasant surprise!)
While I'm not uploading large video files that necessarily require 5G, the speed difference compared to other places is definitely noticeable, as you can see from these tests:

The cafe sign in Hanoi is quite large and its location near Hoan Kiem Lake makes it super accessible. However, there's a catch: right below the sign is an outdoor street cafe. You might easily think that the main cafe has transformed into just that, or that the interior (what little you can glimpse) is just a plain wall and restrooms. Plus, with older reviews from a while back, it would be easy to assume the place had closed down.
But, follow me!

Even if it seems like there's nothing much inside when you first enter, if you head up these stairs...

Voilà! It's right here!
Perhaps because of this somewhat hidden entrance, there were no other customers during my visit... (I really hope it doesn't close down!)

This Hanoi cafe is quiet, spacious, and truly an excellent spot for getting work done.
And yes... there were genuinely no other customers.

I enjoyed a cold brew, then another Americano, and I was the only person there from start to finish while I worked.
I truly hope this gem of a Hanoi cafe, perfect for getting work done, stays open.
📍 Wayne's Coffee Quang Trung
2D P. Quang Trung, Hàng Trống, Hoàn Kiếm, Hà Nội, Vietnam
The sign is large, but the area directly below it looks like a street-side cafe, which might make it difficult to find the actual cafe. You need to go inside and up to the upper floor to find the workspace.
This cafe is quiet and has ample space, making it good for working. There are usually few customers, so you can concentrate in a peaceful environment.
This cafe provides separate 5G Wi-Fi. Like other cafes in Vietnam, the internet speed is fast, so there's no inconvenience for working.
