Haerang Observatory Donghae Review: Ocean Walkway
Looking for an authentic coastal escape in Korea? Discover Haerang Observatory in Donghae, a unique ocean walkway shaped like a mythical goblin's club.
South Korea's east coast is quickly becoming a favorite getaway for travelers seeking a break from the city. If you haven't visited Gangwon Province in a while, the coastal city of Donghae offers a refreshing escape. For those traveling without a car, Dochaebigol Haerang Observatory is an incredibly accessible ocean destination that you can easily explore on foot.

Dochaebigol Haerang Observatory
13-48 Mukhojin-dong, Donghae-si, Gangwon-do
Operating Hours
Daily 10:00 AM ~ 9:00 PM
Located just a quick 5-minute drive from Mukho Station or Mukho Port, Haerang Observatory is extremely easy to reach. You can catch a local bus or walk, making it perfect for solo backpackers. It sits directly across the street from the famous Dochaebigol Sky Valley, so you can easily check off both attractions in one trip.

There is ample parking nearby, and because the walkway itself is quite compact, you only need about 20 to 30 minutes to fully explore and take photos.
You might wonder about the name "Dochaebi." It actually comes from the local regional dialect for dokkaebi, the traditional Korean goblin famous in folklore.

The observatory is designed in the shape of a giant goblin's club stretching out over the water. The bridge extends about 278 feet into the East Sea, and you can only walk along its path during the official operating hours.

At the center of the walkway, you will find a bright yellow structure known as the "Super Tree." It mirrors a similar, larger tree sculpture located higher up on the hill.

Here is a shot taken from the high-altitude Sky Valley observatory. Looking down, you can see the original "Super Tree" structure standing proudly on the coast.

The yellow sculpture at the end of Haerang Observatory brings the local legend to life, symbolizing the moment the goblin's club blooms into full flower.

Haerang Observatory offers a completely different perspective compared to Sky Valley. While Sky Valley gives you a panoramic bird's-eye view, the lower-altitude bridge lets you feel the raw power of the ocean as waves crash directly beneath you.

If you are planning a trip to Donghae, Dochaebigol Haerang Observatory is a quick, highly rewarding stop that pairs perfectly with the neighboring Sky Valley.
Please note that the bridge may close temporarily during bad weather or high waves. Best of all, admission is completely free, making it a must-visit spot to capture the beauty of Gangwon Province.
