Guam Scuba Diving Review: Two Dives & A Turtle Encounter

When you visit Guam, it feels like a missed opportunity to just admire the clear blue waters from afar, doesn't it? That's why my husband and I decided to dive right in this time. Today, I'm sharing our Guam scuba diving experience! From spotting vibrant fish to an unexpected sea turtle encounter, it was a day filled with incredible moments.

1) Our Diving Experience

Guam offers such a wide array of ocean activities that it can be hard to choose! We opted for two introductory dives. While my notes mention Fish Eye Marine Park, it's always a good idea to confirm the actual operating company and specific dive sites when you book.

The Japanese staff member who assisted us during our visit was incredibly kind and helpful. However, the instructions weren't in Korean, so we followed along using English and Japanese. If you're planning a trip, I recommend checking if this is still the case and if Korean-language guides are available for your chosen package.

2) Our First Dive

The first spot we headed to was noted as Family Beach in my memo. The underwater world I first encountered was surprisingly close-up, with fish swimming so near I didn't know where to look! It really struck me how different the ocean looks from above the surface compared to when you actually immerse yourself.

Looking back at our Guam underwater photos, I even found a shot of us giving a 'V' sign side-by-side. At the time, I was so focused on adapting to the underwater environment, but seeing the pictures now, we look genuinely happy, which makes me smile. It was less about being perfect from the start and more about slowly getting comfortable, guided by our instructor.

3) An Unexpected Turtle Encounter

Our second dive was a boat dive, which always brings a surge of excitement from the moment you jump off the boat into the water. While my husband and the others descended deeper, I struggled with ear pressure equalization and couldn't reach the same depth. My mind was eager, but my body had its own pace, which was a bit frustrating!

However, an incredible sea turtle encounter happened at the most unexpected moment! I saw a turtle moving below, and then it started swimming upwards, right towards where I was! I thought I might miss seeing one, only catching a glimpse from afar, so it was truly amazing to meet one up close. Its calm, graceful presence in the photos will stay with me for a long time.

4) Reflections on Our Dive

While it's easy to imagine Guam activities as purely exhilarating, underwater, I quickly realized the importance of prioritizing my own comfort and safety. Instead of pushing myself to descend with my husband, my first priority was communicating any discomfort to the guide. In the end, we both enjoyed our time in the same ocean, each at our own comfortable pace.

This shared experience during our couples' trip gave us both distinct, cherished memories. My husband remembers the breathtaking scenery from deeper down, while I'll forever recall the moment the sea turtle gracefully ascended towards me. For our next diving adventure, I'd definitely double-check the language of instruction and specific dive conditions beforehand, hoping to approach it with a little less initial nervousness!

It wasn't a day where everything went perfectly smoothly from start to finish, but perhaps that's why it remains so vividly in my memory. Looking at these photos, the ocean calls to me once again! Next time, I'll definitely convince my husband to join me, but I'll make sure to enjoy the underwater world at my own comfortable pace!
