Gongsanseong Fortress Wall Walk in Gongju 2026: Why It's a Must-Do
Discover why Gongsanseong Fortress in Gongju is a top destination. Walk its historic walls for stunning views and a deep dive into ancient Baekje history.

When you're searching for the best places to visit in Gongju, South Korea,
Gongsanseong Fortress is guaranteed to pop up on every list.
As one of Gongju's most iconic Baekje Dynasty relics,
it's practically a staple when planning any Gongju itinerary.
However, on my first trip to Gongju, I actually skipped Gongsanseong.
The reason was simple: it was scorching hot!
Since the main appeal is walking along the fortress wall, I didn't see the point in braving the summer heat, so I boldly cut it from my plans.
But afterward,
I couldn't shake the feeling that I'd missed out on a truly essential Gongju experience.

So, on my second trip to Gongju, Gongsanseong was at the top of my list.
The weather this time was overcast and relatively cool, making it much more pleasant for walking.
After experiencing it firsthand, I completely understood why Gongsanseong is consistently recommended as a top attraction in Gongju.
While exploring the historical relics is fascinating, my favorite part was walking the fortress walls and taking in the ever-changing views of Gongju from different vantage points.

Gongsanseong served as the royal fortress during the Baekje Dynasty's Ungjin period and is a UNESCO World Heritage site, part of the Baekje Historic Areas.
You can easily connect your visit with Muryeongwangneung Royal Tomb, the Royal Tombs Park, and the National Gongju Museum to get a comprehensive look at Baekje history in Gongju.
Since I had already visited Muryeongwangneung and the museum on my previous trip to Gongju, I focused solely on Gongsanseong this time.

Admission to Gongsanseong is ~$2 per adult.
If you sign up as an Onnuri Gongju citizen, you can receive a 50% discount.
There's also a combined ticket available that includes entry to Gongsanseong, Muryeongwangneung Royal Tomb, and the Seokjangni Site, which might be a great option if you're interested in exploring all three.

After entering Gongsanseong,
my husband and I immediately began our walk along the fortress wall.

Our first stop was Jinnamru, the South Gate.
While reading the information panel, I learned that the flag colors vary depending on the gate's cardinal direction. It's a small detail, but I found it surprisingly interesting.
If I hadn't known, I probably wouldn't have given it a second thought, but knowing this made me notice even the smallest elements as we walked along the fortress wall.

Next to Jinnamru, an excavation project was underway at the royal palace site!
It was fascinating and exciting to see archaeologists actively uncovering new traces, rather than just admiring a fully restored historical site.
As we descended from Jinnamru towards the palace site,
we stumbled upon an unexpected sight: a valley running through the royal fortress!
(I completely forgot to take a picture, unfortunately.)
My husband and I chatted for a while about how unusual it was to have a valley flowing within a royal palace.
We had some silly thoughts, like, "What if it floods during heavy rain?" or "What if someone poisons the water upstream?"
But making such imaginative connections was part of the fun of exploring Gongju's history.

Continuing along the fortress wall, we ascended to Gongbukru.
The view of the Geumgang River stretched out before us, and we could see Geumgang Shingwan Park laid out below.
It was a uniquely interesting experience to look down on modern Gongju from atop an ancient Baekje royal fortress.

However, personally,
my absolute favorite spot was Gongsanjeong Pavilion.
While Gongbukru offered a wide-open vista of the Geumgang River,
Gongsanjeong provided a different perspective, showcasing the city center of Gongju and its surrounding landscapes.

The greatest charm of Gongsanseong was how the scenery continuously transformed as we changed positions along the fortress wall.

On one side, the majestic Geumgang River;
on another, the bustling city of Gongju;
and within the fortress walls, the royal palace site and other historical relics.
If I had to recommend just one thing at Gongsanseong, I wouldn't point to a specific building, but rather encourage everyone to walk the fortress walls themselves.

After completing a full circuit, I realized that my initial decision to forgo Gongsanseong during the peak of summer wasn't entirely wrong.
The fortress wall path includes uphill sections and continuous walking, so the weather significantly impacts the experience.
Even though it was warm on the day we visited, the overcast sky made it manageable even in areas without shade. But on a bright, sunny day, it would have been incredibly challenging.
If you want to truly enjoy Gongsanseong, I recommend visiting during cooler times of day or in pleasant seasons like fall 2026, rather than the middle of a summer day.
It's also a good idea to bring comfortable walking shoes.
If you're visiting with children or older parents, it's wise to consider the walking distance and inclines when planning your route.

After skipping Gongsanseong on my first trip to Gongju,
I had this persistent feeling that I'd missed something crucial.
But after my second visit, I finally understood why Gongsanseong always features prominently on lists of must-visit places in Gongju.
Beyond its historical significance as a Baekje royal fortress,
what I enjoyed most as a traveler was walking the fortress walls and seeing Gongju from so many different angles.
The stunning Geumgang River view from Gongbukru and the unique scenery from Gongsanjeong Pavilion particularly stood out.
They even say you can catch beautiful night views, so be sure to stop by.
If it's your first time in Gongju and you're looking for iconic attractions,
