A Walk Along the Fortress Wall, Feeling the Breath of Baekje

Gongsanseong Fortress in Gongju is not only a royal fortress where kings of the Baekje Dynasty once resided but also a historic site recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage!

As we ascended the uphill path near the entrance,
we admired the numerous steles erected along the way.

Passing the path lined with steles and ascending a little further, we spotted Geumseoru,
the west gate tower of Gongsanseong Fortress and its main entrance.

Along the path leading up to Geumseoru, our eyes caught Bakery Bam Maeul, an essential stop on any Gongju bakery tour (ppang-ji-sun-rye).
Initially, we planned to buy bread first and then climb the fortress wall, but carrying bread during the walk would have been cumbersome, and we worried it might spoil due to the weather and our subsequent plans. So, we changed our itinerary to visit after our walk.
I highly recommend dropping by Bakery Bam Maeul after you've finished your leisurely stroll around Gongsanseong Fortress.

Throughout Gongsanseong Fortress, there are fascinating explanations about the flags.
Each fortress gate has a different symbolic color and pattern, making it quite interesting to read about.

When we visited early in the morning, the Geumseoru gate was closed,
but by the time we completed our walk around the fortress wall, it had opened up.

As we exited, we made sure not to miss capturing the adorable tiger
mural painted on the ceiling of Geumseoru in a photo.
Recommended Shortest Course: Jinnamnu, Gongbukru, Gongsanjeong

After passing through Geumseoru, you'll encounter a three-way path leading to Gongsanjeong, Gongbukru, and Jinnamnu. For our next adventure,
my spouse and I decided to head towards Jinnamnu, which we presumed was the shortest route (?).

The path climbing along the fortress wall is quite steep, but...

The stunning view of Gongju city unfolding before my eyes made all the effort worth it, erasing any hint of tiredness.

Strolling along the verdant trees and the ancient, green fortress walls,
I truly soaked in the boundless beauty of nature.

Arriving early in the morning meant fewer crowds, and I could gaze out over Gongju city,
enveloped in a refreshing breeze. It truly felt like an excellent decision!

During my visit, excavations were ongoing at the presumed royal palace site,
so some sections had a bit of a 'construction zone' feel to them. (A little bit of a bummer!)

As I continued my walk, I soon reached Jinnamru, the magnificent South Gate of Gongsanseong Fortress.

I ventured a bit down the path towards Yeongeunsa Temple, but realizing it would take up too much time,
I made the tough decision to turn back.

Judging by the photos I took of Ssangsu Bridge,
it looks like I actually went down below it?!

Stepping outside Gongsanseong, an expansive,
emerald-green grassy hill, completely unexpected, stretched out before me.
I longed to settle onto one of the log chairs and savor a moment of peace, but with more to explore,
I could only drink in the view with my eyes before continuing on.
Gongbukru & Gongsanjeong: Where Past and Present Harmoniously Coexist

Descending the grassy hill, the North Gate, Gongbukru, emerged in the distance,
gracefully accompanied by the gently flowing Geumgang River.
What truly fascinated me was seeing modern apartments stretching beyond the river, juxtaposed with the ancient fortress walls, all within one frame. It was a unique and delightful tableau, creating a vivid sense of past and present harmoniously coexisting.
Just walking here is pure joy!

This incredibly vast area is home to the royal relics associated with Gongsanseong Fortress!

I asked my husband to capture a 'frame view' photo, perfectly centered within the Gongbukru pavilion's arch.
But alas, the composition was a complete mess, and I was utterly disappointed ㅠㅠ.
This made me truly understand how my sibling feels when they scold me for my own photography skills on our trips, haha!

However, the view of Geumgang Bridge and the scenic landscape of Gongju, stretching out behind the pavilion,
was pure, unadulterated healing for the soul.

Finally, I couldn't leave Gongsanseong without visiting Gongsanjeong – it just felt like too much of a missed opportunity! So, up I climbed to reach it.

Among the mini stone towers lovingly stacked by previous visitors, my husband and I added our own small stone, making a wish as we did.

The view from Gongsanjeong Pavilion was simply breathtaking!!

Although the wind was quite strong, thanks to the wide-open panorama,
I felt incredibly refreshed and invigorated.
