Shinwonsa Temple, Gongju: Discover Empress Myeongseong's Prayer Site
Seeking tranquility in Gongju? Discover Shinwonsa Temple and its historic Jungakdan, a revered prayer site linked to Empress Myeongseong. Find peace and cultural depth.
When you're searching for places to visit in Gongju, South Chungcheong Province, famous spots like Gongsanseong Fortress or the Royal Tomb of King Muryeong often come to mind first.
However, if you're looking for a quieter place to enjoy a leisurely stroll, Shinwonsa Temple on Gyeryongsan Mountain is a wonderful addition to your itinerary.

My husband and I visited Shinwonsa during the Liberation Day holiday in August 2026. While the summer crape myrtle and lotus flowers were in full bloom, I actually had a special reason for seeking out this particular temple.

Though I don't follow any specific religion, I've always felt a deep connection to Buddhism.
I particularly enjoy visiting temples during my travels. There's something incredibly calming about walking slowly through a peaceful temple complex; it truly soothes the mind.
Since moving to Sejong, Gongju has become easily accessible, and I often find myself exploring different attractions in Chungnam Gongju.

That's how I discovered Jungakdan, a special shrine located within Shinwonsa Temple on Gyeryongsan Mountain. Lately, I've been very focused on preparing to start a family.
When I learned that Jungakdan is known as a prayer site for Empress Myeongseong, I felt an inexplicable pull to visit.

Since it was also close to home, my husband and I decided to make the trip to Shinwonsa.

The drive from downtown Sejong to Shinwonsa takes about 40 minutes by car.
We didn't go straight to Shinwonsa; instead, we stopped at Gyeryongsan Muksarang along the way for lunch, where we enjoyed a delicious bowl of acorn jelly soup.

It was perfect for a summer meal, and having lunch before exploring the temple made our itinerary flow seamlessly. Haha!
After visiting Shinwonsa, we continued to explore downtown Gongju, making it an excellent full-day trip.

Upon arriving at Shinwonsa, we were greeted by crape myrtle and lotus flowers, typical of mid-summer.
The natural harmony between the temple buildings and the vibrant flowers created a truly beautiful scene.
Rather than being a large, extravagant temple, Shinwonsa offered a calm and serene atmosphere, characteristic of temples nestled at the foot of a mountain, which I found particularly appealing.

After exploring the temple grounds, we made our way to Jungakdan, the place I was most curious about on this visit.

Shinwonsa's Jungakdan is renowned for its association with mountain spirit prayers.
I had always wanted to see it firsthand after hearing that Empress Myeongseong had prayed here.

Standing in the very space where Empress Myeongseong is said to have prayed and stayed, I felt a peculiar sensation.

Empress Myeongseong usually comes to mind as a historical figure from textbooks, a person of a distant past.
But seeing the actual space where she lived and prayed right before my eyes made her feel like someone from a more recent era, rather than ancient history. It was a strange feeling. (Perhaps because the building was so well-preserved? Haha!)

And at the entrance to Jungakdan, we stumbled upon something unexpectedly fun:
A random dispenser for Buddha's wisdom messages! Haha!
With hopes of starting a family, my husband and I each picked one.

Both my husband and I received the same message:
"Actions should precede words."
Reading this, I felt a slight pang of guilt. Haha! While I kept saying I wanted a baby, perhaps my actions, like my diet and exercise habits, hadn't quite aligned with my words. It felt like a reminder that if we truly desire something, we shouldn't just wish for it, but actively work towards it. I took that message deeply to heart. Haha!

Afterward, we entered Jungakdan, bowed together, and offered quiet prayers. Haha!
📍 Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism Shinwonsa Temple
1 Shinwonsadong-gil, Gyeryong-myeon, Gongju-si, Chungcheongnam-do, South Korea
From my visit, I realized that Shinwonsa offers a different experience compared to places like Gongsanseong Fortress or the Royal Tomb of King Muryeong, which are known for their grand sights.

Instead, I believe it's an ideal spot for those who appreciate tranquil temples or wish to take a leisurely walk around the Gyeryongsan Mountain area.
If you're starting from Sejong, like us, it's easy to combine a visit to Shinwonsa with exploring downtown Gongju.

If you're departing from Daejeon, there's a convenient shuttle bus service that runs between Daejeon Station and Shinwonsa, which you might find helpful for your visit.
If you're looking for things to do in Gongju, Chungnam, and prefer a more relaxed atmosphere over crowded tourist spots, I highly recommend including Shinwonsa Temple on Gyeryongsan Mountain in your travel plans!
