Gongju Day Trip Itinerary 2026: From Gyeryongsan to the Historic City
Join us on an unforgettable day trip to Gongju, South Korea! We're sharing our hand-picked itinerary of 8 must-visit spots, blending historical charm with delicious local finds. Get ready for an authentic adventure!
In summer, my husband and I
took a day trip to Gongju, Chungnam Province.
When you think of Gongju, historical sites like Gongsanseong Fortress or King Muryeong's Tomb
often come to mind first. But as we actually planned our travel itinerary,
we realized there were so many more incredible places to visit than we expected!

This time, we traveled by car,
starting near Gyeryongsan Mountain,
and explored all the way to downtown Gongju.
From famous tourist attractions,
to charming small shops and delightful dessert cafes,
we'll introduce 8 Gongju day trip spots
that my husband and I personally visited!
8 Must-Visit Spots for a Gongju Day Trip
Gyeryongsan Muksarang
Sinwonsa Temple
Na Tae-ju Grass Flower Literary House
Gongju-eup Office
Gaga Store
Polaris Gelato
Gongsanseong Fortress
Bakery Inhwadang
We started our day with lunch
and arrived at our last destination
around early evening.
Our itinerary took us from Gyeryongsan Mountain to downtown Gongju,
and we took our time, enjoying snacks along the way.
1. Gyeryongsan Muksarang

Our first stop was
Gyeryongsan Muksarang.
This place is famous for selling 150 servings of Dotori-mukbap
(acorn jelly soup with rice) daily.

Dotori-mukbap is one of those dishes
that just comes to mind during summer, isn't it?
My husband and I started our trip
with a delicious lunch here.

While Gongju is famous for its many chestnut-based dishes,
if you're looking for a meal near Gyeryongsan Mountain,
Dotori-mukbap is also a fantastic choice, wouldn't you agree?
2. Sinwonsa Temple

After lunch, we headed to
Sinwonsa Temple, nestled in the foothills of Gyeryongsan Mountain.

This temple is home to Jungakdan, known as Empress Myeongseong's prayer site.
It's a historic space where rituals were performed for the mountain spirit of Gyeryongsan.
If you appreciate a peaceful atmosphere,
this is definitely a place worth adding to your Gongju itinerary.
3. Na Tae-ju Grass Flower Literary House

During this Gongju trip,
the place that truly left the biggest impression on me
was definitely the Na Tae-ju Grass Flower Literary House.
To be honest, I don't usually
read a lot of poetry, so
I didn't have high expectations at first.

But when I actually visited, it was surprisingly enjoyable!
The conversation with AI Poet Na Tae-ju was especially memorable.

While it might not boast flashy attractions,
I really enjoyed the peaceful stroll
and having time to reflect.
Among the 8 spots I'm sharing today,
this is personally the place I'd most recommend!
4. Gongju Eup Office

Just about a 3-minute walk away
from the Nataeju Grass Flower Literature Museum,
we also visited the Gongju Eup Office.
This building has been in use since the Japanese colonial period,
and it's a place where the old architectural style remains beautifully intact.

Inside, we could explore Gongju's past
through fascinating models and historical photographs.
To be honest, there weren't a ton of sights to see,
but since it's free and conveniently close to the literature museum,
it was a nice spot to stop by for a quick visit.
5. Gaga Store

Gaga Store wasn't on our original itinerary,
but we stumbled upon it by pure chance!
We actually meant to go to Gaga Bookstore,
but I mixed up the names,
and ended up at Gaga Store instead, haha!

It was even decorated like a bookstore,
so at first, I didn't even realize I'd gone to the wrong place.. haha!

It was a small, self-service store selling
books, postcards, and various trinkets.
While it wasn't large enough to browse for a long time,
it was a pleasant spot to pop into if you're passing by.
These kinds of serendipitous discoveries are part of the fun of traveling, I think!
6. Polaris Gelato

On a summer trip to Gongju,
a refreshing dessert is an absolute must!

At Polaris Gelato,
we ordered a combination set with candied chestnuts (boni-bam)
and four delicious flavors of gelato.
This combo wasn't on the regular menu; it was only visible on the kiosk!

I don't precisely remember all the flavors we had,
but I'm certain we picked mugwort flavor, haha!

The gelato was incredibly chewy and rich,
and it paired perfectly with the sweetly stewed chestnuts,
making for a delicious treat on a hot summer day.

There was also a small gift shop tucked away in a corner of the store.

They had items themed around Gongju chestnuts,
like 'gonggi-nori' sets (a traditional Korean game), keychains, and more.
They also sold local spirits made at breweries right here in Gongju.
It was great to enjoy a refreshing dessert
and also browse for unique souvenirs.
7. Gongsanseong Fortress

Next up is Gongsanseong Fortress, a representative tourist attraction in Gongju!
This ancient site holds the rich history of the Baekje Kingdom's Ungjin period,
and walking along the fortress walls myself made it even more special, haha!

Especially from Gongsanjeong Pavilion,
I could look down at the Geumgang River and the surrounding scenery.
When I visited, the weather was cloudy,
so the view was a little disappointing,
but it was actually quite pleasant for a walk in the middle of summer.

On a cool day like these days,
walking along the fortress wall path would be absolutely wonderful.
8. Bakery Inhwadang

The grand finale of our one-day trip to Gongju
was almond chestnut pie!
At first, we went to Bakery Bam-maeul (Chestnut Village),
but it was incredibly crowded.

So, we moved right next door to Bakery Inhwadang.

The almond chestnut pies were ~$2 each
and we bought two to enjoy with some milk from a convenience store.

Inside Inhwadang's chestnut pie,
you'd find chestnuts and walnuts.
The crunchy and savory almond topping
on top was especially delicious.
Later, we even tried the chestnut pie from Bam-maeul,
but for our taste,
Inhwadang's almond chestnut pie was a bit tastier. Haha.
Gongju One-Day Trip Review
This trip allowed us to enjoy a variety of experiences,
from historical sites and a literary museum to quaint shops and Gongju chestnut desserts.
Personally, the highlight of this itinerary for me was
the Na Tae-joo Grass Flower Literary House,
but if you want to see quintessential Gongju scenery,
I also highly recommend Gongsanseong Fortress!

Gongju Eup Office (Town Office) and Gaga Store are great for a quick look,
while Gongsanseong Fortress is best explored with plenty of time.
If you're planning a one-day trip to Gongju,
rather than just visiting the famous tourist spots,
try exploring the charming smaller places nearby as well.
You might just discover unexpected delights
in places you didn't even consider.
