After a lovely visit to Lucia's Garden, our next stop was a must-visit in Gongju, a true paradise for foodies and snack lovers: Gongju Sanseong Market!

Honestly, our original destination was Buja Tteokjip (Rich Rice Cake House), famous for its specialty rice cakes. I was mentally prepared for a long wait, even planning to return the next morning if it was too crowded during the holiday weekend. And sure enough, the line stretched all the way past the Gongju Chestnut Bread Main Branch!
To make matters worse, some of their most popular rice cakes, including the signature chestnut mochi, were already sold out.
Putting aside my disappointment, I decided to embrace our Plan B: the Gongju Chestnut Bread Main Branch, right across the street!
But guess what? This place was just as popular, bustling with customers! I couldn't help but wonder if everyone else had also made their way here as an alternative to Buja Tteokjip.

During holiday afternoons, both Buja Tteokjip and Gongju Chestnut Bread Main Branch have incredibly long queues. The next morning, when I returned to Gongju Sanseong Market for an early start at Buja Tteokjip, the Gongju Chestnut Bread Main Branch was pleasantly quiet, allowing me to capture some great exterior photos. If you prefer to avoid the crowds, I highly recommend visiting in the morning!

Stepping inside, I was greeted by a huge, adorable chestnut mascot hanging from the ceiling – a perfect nod to Gongju, the "City of Chestnuts." It instantly brought a smile to my face and made for a fantastic photo opportunity!
The walls were adorned with awards, patent certificates, and an impressive collection of celebrity autographs. It was fun to spot the signatures of actors Shin Seung-ho and Lee Yi-kyung, as well as Olympic fencer Oh Sang-uk.
The shop also has about two tables inside, making it a convenient spot to grab a quick bite and refuel during your market exploration.

The biggest draw of Gongju Chestnut Bread Main Branch, without a doubt, is its incredible value. I was genuinely surprised by how affordable both the bread and the drinks were!
Time to grab a tray and embark on a bread-hunting adventure!
As I patiently waited in line, a staff member brought out a freshly baked batch of what I thought was Roll Cheese Chestnut Bread and placed it on the display. Cheese and chestnuts? A match made in heaven, I thought! I immediately grabbed one, convinced it was a must-try.
But, dear readers, a surprising twist awaited me... I'll tell you all about it below!
The gift sets had separate display samples, showcasing their varied and neat contents. They looked perfect as souvenirs or gifts to commemorate a trip to Gongju.
And then, the glorious lineup of mini breads! The prices were unbelievably generous. In today's economy, finding breads for ~$1 is truly amazing!
I was so impressed by the affordable prices. Since I knew I'd be back at Gongju Sanseong Market the next day for the Buja Tteokjip open run, I decided not to get carried away and just bought a small selection to sample.

After selecting a variety of treats, the total came to just ~$5! What incredible value for money!
We grabbed our bag of bread and immediately started munching as we walked along the Jemincheon Stream. The Gongju Chewy Chestnut Bread, priced at an unbelievable ~$1 each, was a perfect two-bite snack. Both it and the Sweet Potato Cheese Ball were pleasant and straightforward in flavor, making them ideal for a casual, budget-friendly treat. Personally, I found the Sweet Potato Cheese Ball slightly more appealing than the Chewy Chestnut Bread!
And now, for the bread I mentioned earlier, the one I thought was the Roll Cheese Chestnut Bread! Turns out, the staff member had accidentally placed it in the wrong spot; it was actually a Pumpkin Chestnut Bread. Oops!
This bread had a truly unique texture – not quite bread, not quite rice cake, but somewhere between a pound cake and a mochi. While it wasn't my personal favorite, my husband absolutely loved it, praising how generously filled it was with pumpkin. He said it was right up his alley!
Though I didn't snap a separate photo, both my husband and I agreed that our absolute favorite was the Purple Sweet Potato Bread! At ~$1, it was the most expensive of the mini breads we bought (if you can even call that expensive!), but one bite delivered a rich sweet potato flavor and a delightful sweetness. If you visit Gongju Chestnut Bread Main Branch, I highly recommend giving the Purple Sweet Potato Bread a try!
Overall Thoughts
Although we ended up at Gongju Chestnut Bread Main Branch thanks to the massive queue at Buja Tteokjip, it turned out to be a surprisingly satisfying visit. The excellent value allowed us to try a variety of treats without breaking the bank, which was a lot of fun.
After enjoying scones and tea at Lucia's Garden and then indulging in these delicious snacks, we were so full that these breads actually became our dinner that night!
Of course, my big-eater husband still managed to round off the evening back at our accommodation with some instant ramen – his perfect late-night snack and hangover cure, haha!
