Do you know Gongju and Buyeo, cities of the Baekje Kingdom?
If Gyeongju feels like the entire city is a Silla museum,
then Gongju and Buyeo were like Baekje museums.
It was my first time visiting, and I completely fell in love with their charm.
I planned my trip to Buyeo during the Buddha's Birthday holiday in May.
When there were no programs at Buyeo Seoul Farm,
I heard that Seoul citizens could get a discount on accommodation,
so I booked a month in advance and got to visit affordably.
It was a studio-style room, small but had everything we needed,
and it was great to be able to barbecue right on the terrace out front.
📍 Buyeo Seoul Farm

We bought food at Buyeo Hanaro Mart,
brought back pork neck and sausages,
and with a hint of water parsley aroma, we enjoyed a delicious meal, and just like that, it was 6 PM!
The most famous accommodation in Buyeo is probably Lotte Resort Buyeo.
In front of Lotte Resort Buyeo, there's the Baekje Cultural Land, a historical theme park that recreates Sabigung Palace, the royal palace of Baekje, and it even has night openings, so we headed straight there.
This is apparently where the scene from the drama 'Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo' was filmed, where Wang So shielded Hae Soo from the rain.
This is the Sabiro Train, which allows you to tour Baekje Cultural Land while listening to an audio guide.
Since there's a set capacity, if it's a weekend,
make sure to book your train tickets first.
We arrived around 6:40 PM, but all the seats were already taken,
so we bought tickets on-site for the 8:20 PM Sabiro Train.
Then, off we went to Baekje Cultural Land for the 'Night Goblin Eradication Operation'!

Night Goblin Eradication Operation
This is a children's program where you find goblins hidden throughout Baekje Cultural Land,
collect stamps,
and receive a gift.
Operates during night openings (18:00~21:00)
Registration closes 30 minutes before operating hours.
Participation fee is ~$3 (admission fee separate)
The grass plaza was much larger than I expected, making Baekje Cultural Land truly immense.
If I hadn't heard the explanations, it would genuinely feel like an actual historical site.
Starting from Jeongyangmun, the entrance to Baekje Cultural Land,
we went searching for night goblins, starting from the left.
The route was Bamboo Forest -> Sabigung Palace -> Sugyeongjeong Pavilion -> Daetongmun Gate -> Ancient Tombs Park.
Following this route means you'll have explored most of Baekje Cultural Land,
and it took about an hour.
The gift for completing the Night Goblin mission was actually given to us beforehand at Jeongyangmun upon our arrival,
so we received an LED mosquito repellent bracelet.
Since our Sabiro Train was at 8:20 PM, we waited a bit, enjoying ice cream at a convenience store,
and then got to re-experience Baekje Cultural Land, which we had just walked through, enjoying the cool breeze from the Sabiro Train.
The Sabiro Train ride lasts about 20 minutes.
It would likely be too hot during the day, so I highly recommend the night opening!
And that concluded our first day.
📍 Baekje Cultural Land
455 Baekjemun-ro, Gyuam-myeon, Buyeo-gun, Chungcheongnam-do (Baekje Cultural Land)
On the morning of our second day, after checking out of our accommodation,
we had reserved the Children's Museum at the National Buyeo Museum for 10:30 AM,
so we visited right on time.
Online reservations are available starting 14 days before your visit,
and walk-in registrations are not accepted, so please make sure to reserve in advance before visiting.
There was so much useful information, but now that he's 8 years old, I wonder if we should just head straight to a museum instead?
My elementary schooler isn't as interested as he used to be ㅠㅠ He's growing up so fast, isn't he?
At a nearby cafe, they had mango bingsu and Gongju chestnut bread,
which we enjoyed together. Oh my gosh... why was it so incredibly delicious?!
For our next stop, in Buyeo, you can typically hop on an amphibious bus,
but it's temporarily suspended, so we came to enjoy the Baekmagang River Cruise instead!
When I searched, two ferry terminals came up,
but please note that one is now closed due to past flood damage,
so you absolutely MUST come to the "Gudeure Ferry Terminal."
📍 Gudeure Naruteo Public Parking Lot

The weather was absolutely glorious, so beautiful it felt like King Uija himself would have leaped up in delight!
A round trip ticket is ~$8 for adults and ~$5 for children.
When you take the Baekmagang River Cruise, you'll get to see Nakhwaam Rock right from the boat!
You can disembark right away to visit Goransa Temple and
with a separate ticket, even explore Busosanseong Fortress.
Goransa Temple is a quaint little temple, renowned for the unique Gorancho plant that grows there,
and you can even sip the fabled Goran medicinal water!
Even my 8-year-old, convinced it would make him healthier, drank a ton of Goran medicinal water and had a good laugh!
The scenery was absolutely breathtaking, and the boat ride itself was a blast!
On your way back, you can simply hop on any returning boat at your leisure.
Buyeo is so renowned for its stunning lotus flowers that it even hosts a magnificent lotus festival!
Given its fame, we just had to try the delicious lotus leaf rice set meal.
They even served grilled fish and japchae, perfect for the kids,
and honestly, every single banchan (side dish) was simply divine!
📍 Sabihyang

While there are still so many incredible places in Buyeo we didn't get to explore,
I had to be back at work the next day, so we decided to head a bit further north,
making our way to the magnificent Gongsanseong Fortress.
It took us about 30 minutes to reach Gongsanseong Fortress in Gongju from Sabihyang restaurant.
Departing from right in front of Gongsanseong Fortress,
the Goma Train covers a fantastic route: Gongju Royal Tomb of King Muryeong - Gongju Hanok Village - Gongju National Museum - and Gomanamuso Solbat (Gomanaru Pine Forest).
There's a wonderful Goma Train that covers this route, so I made sure to buy our tickets in advance!
All the earlier time slots were completely sold out, so I managed to snag tickets for the very last train,
the 5 PM departure! Woohoo!
With about an hour to spare before our Goma Train departed,
we popped over to Bakery Bam-ma-eul (Chestnut Village Bakery), a place I'd been eager to try,
and indulged in some delicious chestnut pie. It was absolutely delightful,

The Goma Train was quite similar to the Sabiro Train we'd enjoyed at Baekje Cultural Land earlier.
It also offered fantastic audio commentary on the sights.
The only slight drawback was that since it was the final time slot, the Royal Tomb of King Muryeong and the Gongju National Museum were already
closed for the day, so we could only pass by them.
At our last stop, the beautiful Gomanaru Solbat (pine forest), they generously gave us about 20 minutes to explore,
so we enjoyed a lovely stroll through the pine forest before hopping back on the Goma Train to return to Gongsanseong Fortress.
While you could certainly drive your own car to these spots, I find that when you take the train, children
become much more engaged and excited, making the experience even more enriching!
And right across from Gongju Hanok Village,
I spotted Geumgang Oncheon (Hot Spring)... The humidity was really high that day,
and I had sweated a lot. Plus, it seemed like my child would fall asleep on the way back to Seoul,
so we decided to take a bath right there in Gongju.
Of all the public baths I’ve visited, this one had the most spacious tubs!
I'd always wanted to visit Gyeongju, but because of the distance,
it wasn't an easy trip to plan.
But since Gongju (and Buyeo) is only about a 2-hour drive from Seoul,
if you're looking to explore some fascinating historical cities, I highly recommend checking out Buyeo and Gongju!
The 'Night Goblin Extermination Operation' runs from 18:00 to 21:00 during the night opening hours. Applications close 30 minutes before the operation time. The participation fee is ~$3, and admission is separate.
For the Baengmagang River cruise, you should go to 'Gudurae Dock'. Please note that other docks are closed due to flood damage. The round-trip fare is ~$8 for adults and ~$5 for children.
The last operating time for the Goma Train is 17:00. If you take this train, you can visit the Tomb of King Muryeong in Gongju, Gongju Hanok Village, Gongju National Museum, and Gomanaru Solbat Pine Forest. You will have about 20 minutes for a walk at Gomanaru Solbat Pine Forest.
Advance online reservation is mandatory for the National Buyeo Museum Children's Museum. Reservations can be made starting 14 days prior to your visit, and on-site registration is not accepted.
