Bakery Bam-maeul Gongju: Is the Chestnut Pie Worth the Wait?
Is Gongju's famous Chestnut Pie worth a 30-minute wait? Discover Bakery Bam-maeul, its delicious treats, and tips for visiting this popular spot near Gongsanseong Fortress.

After exploring the historic Gongsanseong Fortress on your Gongju trip, you'll naturally spot Bakery Bam-maeul right across the street.
This place is famous for its Gongju Chestnut Pie, so I made sure to stop by after my visit to the fortress.
My first attempt was thwarted by an incredibly long queue, so I gave up. But two weeks later, I returned and finally managed to snag some chestnut pies after waiting for about 30 minutes.
After tasting it, the rich flavor of chestnuts and chestnut paste really came through. It’s definitely a treat worth trying at least once during your Gongju visit or as a unique souvenir.
However, if the line is excessively long, I'd probably think twice about whether it's absolutely essential to wait.

Bakery Bam-maeul is conveniently located right on the path as you descend from Gongsanseong Fortress.
I already knew it was famous for its Gongju Chestnut Pie, so I was excited to visit. Its prime location, perfect for combining with a visit to Gongsanseong, makes it an ideal stop for a day trip itinerary.
But here's the catch: the waiting line!

My first visit happened to be during a major national holiday weekend. The queue was far longer than I anticipated.
Initially, I thought, "Okay, the line's a bit long," and kept walking to find the end of it. But when I saw the line stretching all the way around to the back of the building, I threw in the towel.
Even though I knew Gongju Chestnut Pie was famous, the sheer length of the queue was daunting. So, I cleanly gave up on my first visit! Haha.

Two weeks later, I returned to Gongju.
This time, it seemed much quieter than my previous visit, making me hopeful I could just walk right in. But, alas, that wasn't the case. Haha.

I ended up waiting for about 30 minutes, starting from the back entrance of Bakery Bam-maeul, before I could finally purchase the chestnut pies.

Based on my two visits, if you're planning a trip to Gongju during a peak holiday season, like a long weekend, it's wise to factor in potential waiting times when organizing your itinerary.

While waiting, I noticed Bakery Bam-maeul offers an impressive variety of chestnut-themed desserts.
Starting with their signature Chestnut Pie, they also feature chestnut madeleines, chestnut yokan (sweet bean jelly), chestnut eclairs, chestnut pandoro, and many other desserts that highlight Gongju's famous specialty: chestnuts.

We didn't go overboard with purchases, opting for a 6-pack of the much-anticipated Chestnut Pie and two chestnut madeleines.

With a constant stream of customers, fresh chestnut pies were continually coming out of the oven. We were lucky enough to receive ours warm. They even opened the box for us to let them cool down a bit! LOL.

When I visited, showing a local Gongju Citizen Card offered a 5% discount. Also, if you presented a pregnant woman's badge or maternity booklet, you could use their priority pass for expectant mothers.
If you're an expectant mother planning to visit Bakery Bam-maeul during an upcoming holiday weekend, keep this in mind! Haha.

Back home, I finally got to taste the chestnut madeleine and the chestnut pie.

To be honest, the chestnut madeleine didn't strike me as significantly different from a regular madeleine.
Perhaps because I had high expectations for a Gongju chestnut dessert, I wished the chestnut flavor had been a bit stronger. Haha.

The Gongju Chestnut Pie, however, truly delivered on its chestnut promise.
It's filled with both whole chestnuts and chestnut paste, so with every bite, the distinct chestnut flavor was wonderfully pronounced.

I found the chestnut pie even more delicious when I warmed it slightly in an air fryer. The crust became a bit crispier, and the warm chestnuts and paste tasted even better. Paired with a cup of coffee, it was a perfectly delightful combination. Haha.

5-9 Baekmigoel-gil, Gongju-si, Chungcheongnam-do, South Korea
Having visited Bakery Bam-maeul twice – giving up once and waiting 30 minutes the second time – my expectations were quite high before tasting.
After finally trying it, I was pleased by the prominent chestnut flavor and the authentic local touch it brought as a dessert from Gongju, a city famous for its chestnuts.

The convenient location, allowing you to naturally stop by after visiting Gongsanseong Fortress, is a huge plus.
So, if the line isn't too long, I definitely recommend stopping by during your Gongju trip to taste the Gongju Chestnut Pie or pick some up as a travel souvenir. However, if the wait is excessively long, I'd probably reconsider altering my travel plans just for it.
