Baekje Cultural Center: Gongju's Must-Visit Indoor Media Art
Explore Gongju's newest cultural gem, the Baekje Cultural Center. Dive into captivating media art, engaging family musicals, and hands-on workshops, perfect for any weather.
After moving to Sejong, I've found myself frequently exploring the nearby city of Gongju, a true hidden gem in South Korea.
Just two weeks ago, I found myself back in Gongju, and this time, the newly opened Baekje Cultural Center beckoned. What I discovered was far more than just an exhibition space; it's a dynamic cultural complex offering everything from stunning media art and engaging family musicals to interactive workshops, all under one roof.
Crucially, its indoor nature makes it a fantastic new option for things to do in Gongju, especially when the weather isn't cooperating.

On my visit, I experienced the 'Time Connected by Light, Baekje' exhibition. The quality of the exhibition far exceeded my expectations, and there were so many fantastic photo opportunities. It’s truly an excellent spot for family trips with kids, and equally perfect for couples seeking an indoor date idea.
Discover Gongju's Newest Indoor Gem: The Baekje Cultural Center
The Baekje Cultural Center is strategically located near the National Gongju Museum and King Muryeong's Tomb, making it an ideal addition to any Baekje historical tour in Gongju.
Its offerings include the captivating media art exhibition, the Jinyomsu family musical, and hands-on Mureung Workshop programs.

Honestly, I initially went just for the media art, but upon arrival, I discovered it was the opening day for the Jinyomsu family musical! Haha. It turned out to be a much more diverse and entertaining space than I had anticipated!
While I didn't personally attend the musical, if you're visiting with children, I highly recommend checking the schedules for both performances and workshops in advance, in addition to the media art exhibition.
Baekje Cultural Center Media Art: 'Time Connected by Light, Baekje'

The exhibition I personally experienced was 'Time Connected by Light, Baekje,' held in the Bidandeul Exhibition Hall.
Admission is ~$7 per person. However, if you have an Onnuri Gongju Citizen Card, you can enjoy the exhibition for just ~$4. To be frank, my expectations weren't initially very high. With so many media art exhibitions around these days, I've often been disappointed by those that simply project videos onto a large screen.

But the exhibition at the Baekje Cultural Center was far more engaging than I anticipated! Haha.

It artfully weaves together stories connecting Gongju and Baekje, exploring the Geumgang River, the Gomanaru legend, Baekje's rich history and crafts, and the mysteries of King Muryeong's Tomb through various immersive media art installations.

The way light and video were presented also changed as I moved from one space to another, ensuring it wasn't just a simple screen-watching experience.
As I walked through, it even reminded me of Eric Oh's media art exhibition I saw at the House of Refuge in Jeju a while back.

While they are distinct exhibitions, I think it speaks to how well-designed the space and video compositions were here, far surpassing my initial expectations.

What truly stood out to me was how the exhibition didn't merely use Baekje as a backdrop, but skillfully interwove the history and stories of Gongju into the entire narrative of the display. Haha.
Photo Zones and Fun Souvenirs

Another reason I loved the exhibition was the abundance of photo opportunities.

There's even an 'Insaeng Ne-cut' photo booth midway through the exhibition, where my partner and I captured some memorable shots. We took quite a few photos within the media art spaces themselves.
This makes it a great spot not just for families with kids, but also for couples looking for a fun date! Haha.

Exiting the exhibition leads you directly into the art shop.

What really caught my eye here were the Mumu and Reung-i goods, themed after the mythical Jinyomsu guardian creature!

They were incredibly cute, and I really wanted to buy them, but unfortunately, when I visited, the Mumu and Reung-i goods were only on display and not yet available for purchase. T_T I'll definitely plan another visit once they start selling them!
For Families: Add Shows and Workshops to Your Itinerary
If you're planning a family trip to Gongju, it's worth checking the schedules for the family musical and hands-on workshops.
After immersing yourselves in Baekje's stories through the media art and performances at the Baekje Cultural Center, you can then visit the National Gongju Museum to see actual artifacts, and finally, head to King Muryeong's Tomb for a natural and flowing historical journey.
If the weather is pleasant, you can explore the outdoor areas of King Muryeong's Tomb and the Royal Tombs Park. However, if it's raining or excessively hot, you can focus solely on the Baekje Cultural Center and the National Gongju Museum, making it a perfect indoor itinerary.
