Gomgol Sikdang: Essential Info

Operating Hours: 11:00 AM - 9:00 PM

When planning my trip to Gongju, the very first place
I put on my must-try foodie list was Gomgol Sikdang!
This place is so famous that everyone said I absolutely had to do an 'open run' (be there right at opening),
so I started out super nervous. But since it was a Golden Week holiday, traffic was terrible,
and I ended up arriving around 11:10 AM.
Parking & Waiting Hacks

I was worried there wouldn't be any parking spots, but thankfully,
thanks to the kind parking attendant, we managed to park
without any issues!!

Since I heard this place always has a long wait, I tried to make a Catchtable reservation at 10:51 AM while driving.
But then the reservation suddenly dropped out—I wondered what was going on? But when we actually
arrived, there was no wait, so we got a table right away!
What a lucky break! Haha!
In my opinion, if you arrive before 11:20 AM on weekends or holidays,
you should be able to eat without waiting at all.
That 10-minute difference can lead to a huge wait later on,
so everyone, try to get there early... haha!
Menu & Ambiance Highlights

Gomgol Sikdang in Banjuk-dong, Gongju, is a local favorite
that specializes in just four amazing dishes: Grilled Fish, Braised Beltfish,
Charcoal-Grilled Spicy Pork Plate, and Whole Jeju Beltfish BBQ!
Up until this point, everything was so peaceful, haha!

There were plenty of parasol tables on the outdoor terrace as well,
and it was packed with customers!

The room on the far right had that classic 'old-school' vibe,
and there was even a space shaped a bit like a greenhouse(?),
but we were guided to the leftmost section.
Honest Review of Our Order
Since my husband is a huge fan of spicy pork and grilled fish,
we ordered one serving of the Charcoal-Grilled Spicy Pork Plate and one serving of Grilled Fish.
Usually, other restaurants require you to order two servings of the same dish,
so it was great that we could order individual servings here.
FYI: The Spicy Pork Plate does not include rice!

After ordering, we waited a short while, and then the banchan (side dishes)
were neatly laid out for us.
The selection of side dishes seems to vary slightly depending on when you visit.

There's a self-service corner, so you can freely get more side dishes if you need them.
And it's no secret that the marinated small crabs (ssalgae-muchim) were so delicious, I had extra, haha!
Sungnyung (scorched rice tea) and aprons are also available at the self-service corner.

Water is provided in individual bottles, which is great for hygiene.
You'll find your chopsticks, napkins, soy sauce, and soy sauce dishes in the drawer
next to your table.
Charcoal-Grilled Spicy Pork Plate

The smoky aroma from this was absolutely insane!!

The portion was more generous than I expected, and cutting it with scissors made it seem even bigger, haha!

It's delicious on its own, but wrap it in ssam (lettuce wrap) and it's pure heaven, haha!
Grilled Fish

It was a single serving of grilled fish, but I was surprised by how much there was.
How about a husband who's great at deboning fish? Haha!
My mom always says there's nothing more adorable than seeing her son-in-law enjoy his fish so well, haha!

It was perfectly grilled to a crisp on the outside, but honestly, the taste was pretty standard.
Good for a light meal, but nothing extraordinary, you know?
Still, thanks to my husband's excellent fish-deboning skills, I comfortably enjoyed it with plenty of wasabi soy sauce.

The side dishes were great, and with unlimited refills plus a warm bowl of *sungnyung* (scorched rice tea) to finish, it was definitely a hearty and budget-friendly meal!
The *siraegi-guk* (dried radish greens soup) with bean sprouts was also a perfect match for rice.
Final Thoughts

At first, the food was definitely like this, wasn't it??

Yes, we pretty much wiped it all out, haha!

While paying, I noticed a 'Siksin (Food God) Certified Restaurant' sticker on the origin display board.

But the amazing thing was, when we paid at 12 PM, there was a whopping 67 teams waiting in line!!

The waiting area was packed with people, and the parking lot was chaotic, haha!
There were so many couples, friends, and families, and I could hear praises for how delicious it was everywhere. While I wouldn't call it an 'OMG, amazing must-try!' restaurant by my standards, it definitely seems like a place worth visiting during your Gongju trip, especially if there's no long wait.
If you've had a satisfying meal at Gomgol Restaurant, Cafe Bam, right across the street, is also a great spot for your second stop!
So, the next post will be a review of Cafe Bam.
