that I squeezed a short trip to Gili Trawangan into my tight schedule.
But honestly, I almost missed them entirely!

thinking that if I just walked up to Turtle Point, I'd easily spot them.

we pushed ourselves to spend 1 night on Gili Trawangan.
Seeing wild sea turtles was our ultimate goal,
so we made the journey despite the packed schedule.

As soon as we arrived on Gili,
we checked in, threw on our swimsuits,
and rode our rented bicycles straight to Turtle Point.
It was around 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM.
Luckily, our resort was in the northern area,
so it was less than a 10-minute ride to the spot.
With high hopes of swimming with turtles,
we arrived at a highly-rated Google Maps location.
There were plenty of empty sunbeds,
so we grabbed a spot
and got ready to jump into the water...
But do you see the water clarity? Haha.
Instead of the crystal-clear emerald water I expected,
it was incredibly murky and turbulent.
The waves were also surprisingly strong and high.
If you watch the video,
the swells were actually quite rough.
The poor visibility and choppy waves
instantly made us panic.
First of all, I am not a strong swimmer... haha.
My original plan was to wade out to waist-deep water,
watch the turtles feeding on seagrass,
and take some beautiful photos.
But arriving in the afternoon changed everything.
The tide had risen,
the water was cloudy, visibility was near zero,
and we had absolutely no clue where to find the turtles.
We stood there on the shore, staring blankly at the rough waves.
Seeing us in our swim gear holding snorkels,
a friendly local staff member from a nearby beach restaurant
introduced us to a local guide.
On the spot, we ended up booking a private turtle snorkeling tour!
We rented life jackets right on the beach,
and our guide literally pulled us through the water to the exact spots.
I was struggling to film with my phone in a waterproof pouch,
so our guide kindly took my phone,
dove down, and captured some incredible close-up shots of us swimming right next to the turtles!
Without our local guide,
we would have left Gili Trawangan without seeing a single turtle.
Since this was our very first activity on the island,
failing to see them would have been a massive disappointment.
If you arrive in Gili in the afternoon,
the water temperature rises (often reaching around 80°F),
which stirs up sediment and reduces visibility.
Plus, the high tide makes it much harder to locate the turtles on your own.
That is why, if it's your first time visiting Gili Trawangan,
