Getty Center LA 2026: Your Essential Guide Before Renovation
The Getty Center in LA is heading for a major renovation! Make sure you experience its stunning art, architecture, and views one last time before it transforms. Here’s your complete guide.

Hi, I'm Ongsang!
If you're planning a trip to LA,
I really hope you read today's post.
Have you heard the news that the Getty Center is about to undergo a major renovation?
Currently, some areas are already restricted
in preparation for construction, and full-scale renovations
are slated to begin after this year's operations conclude.
While it will undoubtedly return even more spectacular after the refresh,
the Getty Center we know today might be seen for the last time for a while.
I actually visited again recently and felt
it was even more worthwhile to go now, precisely because of this.
So, if you're planning a trip to LA this year,
I highly recommend adding it to your itinerary.

Why You MUST Visit Before the Renovation |
The Getty Center: Why is it an absolute must-visit?

LA is packed with famous tourist spots like Disneyland, Universal Studios, and Santa Monica.
But whenever I go to LA,
the Getty Center is one place I always make sure to visit.
That's because, even though admission is free,
you can see world-renowned masterpieces by artists like
Van Gogh, Monet, and Rembrandt up close,
and enjoy incredible architecture, beautiful gardens,
and panoramic views of the entire LA cityscape.
What surprised me even more, listening to the docent's explanation,
was that this vast collection of artworks originated from Getty's personal collection.
It really makes you realize the sheer scale of it all!
How to Reserve Your Visit to the Getty Center LA
Admission to the Getty Center
is free.
However, I highly recommend
making a reservation before you visit.
Especially on weekends and during peak season,
desired time slots fill up quickly.
Reservations can be made for free on the official website.
Honestly, I've been to the Getty Center many times,
and what really matters is having a ticket for the day,
not necessarily the specific time slot.

Must-See Highlights at the Getty Center

Here's the order I recommend:
① Van Gogh's 'Irises'
Seeing it in person is far more breathtaking than any photo.
② Works by Monet and Rembrandt
You can finally get up close to masterpieces you've only ever dreamed of seeing in textbooks!
③ The Central Garden
This is hands-down my favorite spot at the Getty Center.
It's perfect for a quick break, and you'll capture some truly stunning photos here.
④ The Observation Deck
This spot offers breathtaking panoramic views of the entire city of LA,
so make sure you don't miss it!
Should You Really Take a Docent Tour?

The Getty Center is truly vast, much larger than you might expect.
With such an immense collection of artworks, it's easy to feel overwhelmed on your first visit,
and wonder where on earth to begin.
I've explored it on my own many times before, but
this time, I decided to join a Korean-language docent tour for the very first time.
Our docent, who specialized in Western art, didn't just explain the artworks themselves, but also
effortlessly wove in stories of history and religion, making it all so easy to understand.
Even for someone like me, who isn't an art expert, it was incredibly engaging!
Best of all, those two hours flew by so fast, it felt like just 20 minutes!
I've written a more detailed review of the docent tour, complete with photos,
so be sure to check out the post below!

The Getty Center and Getty Villa
I also recommend a one-day itinerary!
I spent the morning exploring the Getty Center
and then headed to the Getty Villa in the afternoon.
If you're planning to visit both locations on the same day,
there's a crucial tip you absolutely need to know.
It's all about the parking validation ticket!

Whatever you do, don't throw away your parking receipt from the Getty Center!
If you visit the Getty Villa on the same day,
you can get your parking validated at the Information desk,
and you won't have to pay any additional parking fees!
Just head to the Information desk inside the Getty Center,
tell them you plan to visit the Getty Villa today,
and show them your Getty Villa reservation ticket.
They'll then provide you with a ticket just like the one below.

Then, simply present this ticket at the Getty Villa's Information desk,
and they'll ensure you don't incur any extra parking fees!

I used this very trick to explore both incredible locations in a single day,
So, if the Getty Villa is on your itinerary, you absolutely have to take advantage of this!

The Getty Center: Catch It Before the Remodel!

During this recent visit,
I did notice a few things that made me a little sad.
Due to upcoming remodeling, some areas were already restricted or closed off.
However, that actually made me feel even more grateful that I visited now.
While it will surely return even more magnificent after its renewal,
the Getty Center as we know it today
might never be seen in the same way again.

If you're planning a trip to LA this year,
I personally highly recommend you visit it
at least once.
It's an incredible museum, almost unbelievable that it's free,
and even if art isn't your main interest, the architecture, gardens,
and views alone are enough to leave you completely satisfied.
