How to Travel Ecuador's Galapagos Islands

The Galapagos Islands, a volcanic archipelago, are truly a world apart. Located in the heart of the Pacific Ocean, approximately 620 miles off the coast of mainland Ecuador, this unique destination is composed of three major islands and dozens of smaller islets.
Each island boasts its own distinct ecosystem and a fascinating array of endemic wildlife, making it a place you wouldn't want to rush through or see just a glimpse of.

To truly experience the Galapagos, there are two primary ways to explore:
One option is to base yourself on one of the larger inhabited islands like Santa Cruz or San Cristobal and use local ferries for day trips. The other, and the method I wholeheartedly recommend, is a cruise hopping tour.

I chose a 3-night, 4-day cruise, and let me tell you, it was by far the most efficient and satisfying way to explore the Galapagos! I was absolutely thrilled with the experience!

How to Travel Ecuador's Galapagos Islands | Cruise Hopping Tour Detailed Review
A Galapagos cruise is much more than just a mode of transport. For 3 nights and 4 days, it serves as your floating hotel, your personal restaurant, and your seamless connection to new islands each day.

My cabin was comfortable, complete with a private bathroom, ensuring a pleasant stay. The dining area provided three delicious meals a day, plus snacks to keep us energized for our adventures.

In the spacious lounge, I enjoyed chatting with fellow travelers and listening to our naturalist guide explain the next day's itinerary. The deck offered breathtaking views of the Galapagos landscape and incredible sunsets.
Every evening, while we slept soundly, the cruise ship would gracefully navigate to our next destination.

Waking up each morning to a completely different island anchored outside my window was magical. This elimination of travel time is undoubtedly the biggest advantage of a cruise tour.
Landing on Islands via Small Boats

Most of the islands we explored don't have large harbors, so the main cruise ship doesn't dock directly. Instead, we transferred to small inflatable boats, often called dinghies or Zodiacs, to reach the shore.
These nimble boats were used for both our island explorations and snorkeling excursions. They could navigate into narrow caves and close to cliffs, allowing us incredibly intimate encounters with the diverse wildlife.

My 3-Night, 4-Day Galapagos Highlights
The greatest appeal of a Galapagos cruise is the opportunity to land on a completely different island each day, encountering distinct ecosystems and their inhabitants.

Each morning, we’d take the small boat from the cruise to an island. Our days typically involved trekking in the morning, followed by snorkeling or coastal exploration in the afternoon.
Despite being only 3 nights and 4 days, the constant change in scenery and wildlife meant there was never a dull moment!

From vibrant seabirds like blue-footed boobies, frigatebirds, brown pelicans, and swallow-tailed gulls, to sea lions and marine iguanas that show no fear of humans, and even the brilliantly colored Sally Lightfoot crabs – you can observe the iconic wildlife of the Galapagos incredibly close up.

Towards the end of my trip, I visited the Galapagos Tortoise Breeding Center, where I met magnificent giant tortoises and land iguanas. I also had the incredible opportunity to swim alongside sea lions while snorkeling and even spot a Galapagos penguin!

After each exploration, returning to the cruise for relaxation in a comfortable cabin and enjoying fresh seafood while moving to the next destination was a significant part of the overall joy of the trip.

People who were on the cruise together
Even though it was only 3 nights and 4 days, encountering new islands and wildlife daily made for an incredibly special experience, allowing me to fully appreciate the magic of the Galapagos.
While it's certainly an investment, I wholeheartedly recommend a Galapagos cruise hopping tour! You won't regret it!
