Discovering Hanoi's Hidden Cafe Gems

My recent trip to Hà Nội was unexpectedly cut short – flight delays and schedule changes meant less time than I'd hoped. It felt like history repeating itself, as my last visit to Vietnam was a whirlwind, primarily focused on exploring Sapa and Ha Long Bay, with Hanoi merely a transit point.

Back then, I remember thinking, "There isn't much to do here, this short visit is probably enough." But this time, something shifted. Just as I started to uncover the city's hidden charms, it was time to head home. I left with a bittersweet feeling, already planning my return for a longer, more immersive experience!

The Hanoi cafe I'm excited to share today is one of those places that simply draws you in as you walk by.

It's incredibly charming and eclectic. Just based on the vibe alone, I'd rate it as one of Hanoi's must-visit spots. The vintage music playing in the background adds another layer of nostalgia. I didn't recognize any of the songs, but they definitely had an old-school, soulful feel.

The seating consists of cozy, small tables and unique, low stools. There weren't many customers during my visit, so I had plenty of space, but I imagine it could get quite snug if it were crowded.

Here's a look at the menu. I ordered an Iced Americano. When I visit cafes in Vietnam, I usually go for Vietnamese coffee, but I opt for an Americano in two specific situations: right after a meal, or when I've brought my laptop to get some work done. This time, it was right after lunch, so Americano it was!

Oh, and a funny discovery: the person playing the guitar was actually accompanying customers who wanted to sing! Initially, I thought the person singing across from me was an employee because of their prime spot. I even took a picture, thinking they were performing, but later realized they were a patron. So, I've used other photos that don't feature them.

If you have a song request, the guitarist will provide the accompaniment, and you can sing into a wireless microphone. It’s a fantastic spot if you're looking for a unique Hanoi experience where you can belt out some tunes (assuming you know some Vietnamese songs, of course!). I pride myself on knowing quite a bit of V-pop these days, but unfortunately, none of my favorites came up during my visit.
