Curious about facing your own mortality? Read our experience with the 'Well-Dying' coffin ritual on Day 2 of the Daewonsa Temple Stay in Boseong.

If you cleared your mind and body with the Day 1 singing bowl meditation
which I shared in my previous post,
Day 2 begins with the true highlight of the Boseong Daewonsa Temple Stay—an experience that might just become a turning point in your life.
Daewonsa is famous among Korean temples for running the most profound
'Well-Dying' program, which invites you to reflect deeply on life and death.
At first, I was so nervous that my spine tingled,
but as the program unfolded, I broke through my fear of death
and returned home with the unexpected gift of a profound, vast sense of peace.
Today, I’m excited to share a vivid, honest review of our unforgettable second day at Boseong Daewonsa,
from the nourishing temple breakfast to the deeply resonant coffin-laying experience (death meditation).

💡 Jinny's Quick Summary
The highlight of Day 2 at Daewonsa—the death experience (coffin-laying ritual)—is not a forced, tear-jerking program.
By facing the frightening concept of death head-on,
it’s a unique, reflective experience that lets you shake off daily stress and learn a cozy sense of peace.

[Boseong Daewonsa Temple Stay Day 1] Healing and Meditation with Singing Bowls
1. Daewonsa Dawn Chanting, a Peaceful Walk, & 108 Prostrations
Waking Up to the Quiet Temple Dawn
As the morning dew settles, the gentle, rhythmic
sound of the moktak (wooden fish gong) guides us to the Main Buddha Hall (Daeungjeon) for dawn chanting, starting Day 2 with a calm mind.
It’s an optional service at 6:00 AM.
I was too tired and skipped it, but my sister went!
It involved doing 108 prostrations, and she said it was actually a really grounding experience~
A Gentle, Comforting Temple Breakfast (Gongyang)

After the morning service, we had a clean, warm temple breakfast
to gently charge up with healthy energy for the day ahead.
A Stroll Around the Lotus Pond and Forest Path
Before the main program starts,
we take a light stroll around the beautiful grounds of Daewonsa, listening to the sound of the clear stream,
to relax and prepare our minds.

The Little Prince Literature Museum

We even got to try on some traditional clothes and take photos here!
There are meaningful quotes written along the pathway,
so I highly recommend reading them as you walk!
Tibetan Buddhist Museum

It was a wonderful way to learn about Tibetan Buddhist culture.
You can see photos explaining their funeral customs (like sky burials where vultures consume the body...)
as well as various traditional ornaments and souvenirs.
Self-Guided Singing Bowl Experience

Since we didn't get a chance to try it last night,
my sister and I headed over in the morning after the monk told us we were welcome to try it then!

2. Preparing for the "Death Experience" & Writing a Spine-Chilling Will

A lecture to reflect on life: Listening to the guiding monk's low, gentle voice, we confronted the concept of 'death' head-on,
preparing ourselves to say a temporary goodbye to our familiar daily lives.
Stepping inside the Bardo prayer room—designed to resemble what awaits after actual death—
the pitch darkness and eerie lighting sent real shivers down my spine.
Writing our final will: Imagining what it would be like if my life ended today, I slowly wrote down my final words.
Rather than crying from sadness, my past days flashed before my eyes, bringing a strange, serene solemnity.
3. The Coffin Lay-In Experience & An Unexpected, Cozy Peace

Stepping Inside the Dark Coffin Yourself
The moment you carefully step in and lie down inside the wooden coffin placed in the middle of the room,
the cool touch of the wood against your skin spikes your tension to the absolute max.
The Monk's Chanting and Drifting Off to Sleep
Soon, the coffin lid is closed, enveloping you in complete and utter darkness,
and the monk begins to chant prayers from the outside.
Unlike the initial creepiness, listening to the gentle chanting melts all the tension away,
leaving you so incredibly relaxed that you might even start to drift off to sleep.

What Jiny Learned About the Meaning of Death
In that cozy state between deep meditation and sleep, I had a sudden, profound realization:
"We fear it so much before it happens, but maybe death itself is actually this peaceful once you finally cross over."
Rebirth and Catharsis in the Outside World
When the experience ended and the coffin lid opened to let the light back in,
stepping out from that dark, cool room, the temple breeze felt exceptionally refreshing and peaceful.

Jinny's Honest Review
Unlike the typical emotional reviews filled with oceans of tears, I actually learned about the peace hidden behind the fear of death.
It was a healing moment full of unexpected twists that instantly made all my petty daily worries seem entirely trivial.
They also told us to forgive those we need to forgive before entering,
but honestly, I think that might be the hardest part of all.
4. Final Thoughts on the Well-Dying Mind Healing Program

My 2-day, 1-night temple stay at Daewonsa Temple in Boseong, Jeollanam-do, was
a deeply healing journey where the gentle comfort of Day 1's singing bowl meditation
perfectly harmonized with the profound tranquility of Day 2's coffin experience.
Just as we fear death beforehand but find peace afterward,
I found the quiet courage to realize that all my current anxieties and daily worries
will amount to nothing once they pass.
If you're a busy professional struggling with burnout and a chaotic mind,
I highly recommend finding an unexpected, cozy peace and a much-needed pause in the darkness of Daewonsa.
