Daewonsa Temple Stay Review: Boseong Singing Bowl Meditation
Discover deep healing at Daewonsa Temple in Boseong, South Korea. Read our Day 1 review of this spiritual sanctuary, featuring singing bowl meditation.

In the midst of busy daily routines and endless work stress, finding true rest and peace of mind
is something so many busy professionals long for.
To gift myself a weekend of deep relaxation and a chance to focus on my inner voice,
I headed down to Boseong, Jeollanam-do, for a temple stay at the historic Daewonsa Temple.
Daewonsa is famous not only for its stunning natural surroundings but also for its unique meditation programs that beautifully clear the minds of weary modern souls.
Today, I’m excited to share a handy review of my first day at Boseong's Daewonsa Temple stay,
along with my firsthand, soul-soothing experience during the brain-awakening singing bowl meditation program.

💡 Jinny's Quick Summary
The absolute highlight of Day 1 at the Daewonsa Temple stay is definitely the Singing Bowl meditation.
It is incredibly effective at releasing physical tension and melting away stress through gentle sound waves and vibrations.
If you struggle with insomnia or have a racing mind, I highly, highly recommend giving this a try.

Failed Attempt at the 'Youth Temple Stay' Program

I tried signing up for the discounted 'Youth Temple Stay' program, and at first,
my younger sibling actually booked a spot at Songgwangsa Temple!
But I really wanted to experience Boseong Daewonsa—a very special place that offers a simulated death and coffin-laying experience.
So I tried to cancel that and re-apply for Daewonsa... but alas, I failed...
So instead of going for the promo price of ~$19, I ended up paying full price.
And with that, here is my 100% honest, self-funded review!

Daewonsa Temple

1. Daewonsa Temple Stay Orientation & Temple Etiquette

Arrival & First Impressions: When you arrive at Boseong Daewonsa, greeted by the crisp mountain air and serene landscapes,
the very first thing you do is change into the comfortable temple clothing provided.

The vest is placed inside your room, so you can just slip it on!
Just a heads-up, you'll need to bring your own t-shirt and pants to wear under the temple vest!~

Orientation Time: The monk and the temple guide kindly yet solemnly walk us through the basic temple etiquette for our 2-day, 1-night stay—
including how to perform formal bows and where to observe noble silence.

Unplugging from Daily Life: The moment the opening ceremony ends, you put down the smartphone and work worries you’ve been clinging to,
taking your very first step to focus entirely on yourself.
They don't actually confiscate your phone, but it’s definitely best to keep it tucked away, right?

A moktak-shaped bell that brings good luck
if you gently tap your head against it three times before entering?
I did it a bit too hard and ended up with a headache, haha! 😂
I heard they ring the bell 29 times at dawn
and 33 times in the evening.

2. Cozy Temple Rooms & Clean, Mindful Temple Meals

Cozy, Peaceful Temple Rooms (Bangsa)
Retaining the beauty of traditional Hanok architecture, the rooms are wonderfully clean and modern, equipped with underfloor heating (ondol), private bathrooms, and cozy bedding—
making it a super comfortable stay even for busy modern travelers.

A Wholesome, Nature-Infused Evening Meal (Gongyang)
Savoring temple food free of artificial additives and packed with seasonal greens and clean side dishes,
you can feel your body and mind detoxing from all the heavy, greasy takeout food back home.

Reflecting on the Meaning of Baru Gongyang (Buddhist Monastic Meal)

By eating mindfully without leaving a single grain of waste, you find yourself deeply
appreciating the daily meals we so often take for granted in our busy lives.
Temple Etiquette & Evening Chanting (Yebul)

After dinner, we gathered in the Geungnakjeon (Hall of Paradise)
to chant—which kind of felt like singing hymns in a church!
During the evening service (Yebul),
we learned the proper temple manners and bowing techniques.
We even got to chant along to the rhythmic, song-like prayers!~
3. Day 1 Highlight: The Singing Bowl Meditation Experience & Its Healing Effects

The Serene and Solemn Atmosphere of the Meditation Hall
The singing bowl meditation begins as you lay out your mat and find your most comfortable position in the quiet meditation hall, filled with the gentle scent of cedarwood.

Experiencing the Mystical Vibrations of the Singing Bowls
Each time the monk strikes and rubs the singing bowls, the deep, heavy resonance spreads beyond the meditation hall, vibrating through every single cell in your body.
Mental Relaxation and Stress Relief
As you focus on the subtle vibrations felt throughout your entire body—going far beyond just what you hear with your ears—you'll have the incredible experience of watching all the racing thoughts and anxiety wash away like waves on a shore.

Jini's Honest Review
Not long after surrendering myself to the sound of the singing bowls, I experienced such a powerful physical and mental relaxation that I drifted into a deep, hypnotic-like sleep. It was a truly moving and healing time.
I actually dozed off for a second! 🤭
Oh, and Venerable Pema is a monk from Nepal who speaks 5 languages! He is incredibly witty and cheerful—I don't even know how much we laughed! Haha~
4. Final Thoughts on the Singing Bowl Meditation

The first day of the Boseong Daewonsa Temple Stay was a perfect, continuous flow of healing—slowing down the hectic pace of daily life and completely reclaiming inner peace through the soothing sounds of the singing bowls.
When I returned to my room and lay down on the first night, I fell into a wonderfully deep, sweet sleep, completely free from the insomnia that usually keeps me awake.
