GLN Payments in Cambodia 2026: Tips for Cashless Travel

While planning my trip to Cambodia, I was on the hunt for efficient ways to manage my money without constantly dealing with currency exchange. That's when GLN popped into my mind, and I decided to dive in and see if it was a viable option.

The GLN app has been a lifesaver for me, especially in Thailand, where I use it almost daily. It's incredibly convenient because you can pay exactly what you need, and any remaining balance is quickly refunded back to your home currency. This flexibility is why it's so popular. In Thailand, it's even useful for purchasing tickets on the Bangkok BTS!

Naturally, I was curious if GLN would work in Cambodia, so I decided to test it out at a Starbucks. I spotted a red KHQR (Cambodia Quick Response) code, scanned it, but unfortunately, an error popped up. My cashless dreams were briefly put on hold!

If you look closely at the payment terminal, you'll see "ABA BANK" written at the very bottom. This is a crucial detail: terminals associated with ABA Bank often won't accept GLN payments.

After quickly resorting to cash, I dug a little deeper to understand why the GLN payment failed.

The Starbucks terminal was indeed an ABA Bank terminal. These terminals often generate QR codes that are either proprietary ABA QRs or display amounts in US Dollars (USD). In such cases, GLN recognizes them as "unpayable QR codes," hence the error.

The Solution

1. At the checkout, look for a KHQR sticker with the ACLEDA Bank logo. If you find one, try scanning that QR code for payment.

2. If there's no ACLEDA sticker visible, politely ask the staff for "KHQR in Riel, please." Some terminals allow them to switch the currency to Cambodian Riel, which is often compatible with GLN.

Realistically, the best cashless payment options involve using a travel wallet like Travel Wallet (which allows you to load funds and pay by card) or the GLN app (for loading funds and QR payments). Keeping these two methods in mind will be incredibly helpful. While most indoor stores accept QR or card payments, it's wise to carry some US Dollars or Cambodian Riel, as night markets and smaller vendors often operate on a cash-only basis.
