Ready for another adventure? Welcome back to my travel journal! 🌏
While planning our Banff honeymoon,
we went back and forth on whether we should rent a car or book a guided tour.
Guided tours are definitely convenient, but since it was our honeymoon,
the thought of having to stick to someone else's schedule
felt a bit limiting.
So, after much deliberation, we decided to rent a car right at Calgary Airport
and drive all the way to Banff ourselves—
and it turned out to be the absolute best decision! !
Today, I'm sharing all the details about our Banff car rental experience,
including helpful tips and our honest review! 💚

1. Why Renting a Car is a Must in Banff

Banff isn't your typical city-break destination—
it's all about exploring the breathtaking, vast wilderness!
Iconic spots like Lake Louise, Moraine Lake, and Bow Lake
have very limited public transit options
and are spaced quite far apart from each other.
That means you'll need either a tour or a rental car. But with a rental car,
you can beat the crowds by visiting during off-peak hours
and stay as long as your heart desires!
It truly takes your travel freedom to a whole new level!
2. How to Book Your Rental Car

There are three main platforms where you can easily book
a car rental starting from Calgary Airport.
I highly recommend comparing the dates and rates across these sites before booking!
Vehicles sell out incredibly fast during peak season,
and prices will skyrocket. If your travel dates are set,
be sure to lock in your reservation early!

3. Our Banff Car Rental Experience & Review

Once you land at Calgary Airport,
simply follow the signs for the Rental Car Centre—
it's super easy to find!

📋 What to Bring
Passport, International Driving Permit (IDP), and a credit card in the driver's name
Inside the Rental Car Centre,
you'll find various rental car agencies lined up.
The company we chose was Alamo!
Since we wanted peace of mind, we opted for full coverage
and paid for the extra insurance on-site.
Initial Booking Cost + Full Coverage Insurance
Our total cost was around ~$397 for 4 days!

Once you're done with the paperwork, head over to the rental car pickup area
to inspect your vehicle.
Just in case any issues pop up later,
make sure to thoroughly check the car's condition
and absolutely take photos and videos!

The car was super clean inside, had plenty of trunk space,
and made long-distance driving incredibly comfortable! I loved it!
Instead of worrying about filling up the tank before returning the car,
we chose to pre-pay for the fuel during checkout.

It was so convenient not having to drag our luggage around after landing;
we could just load everything directly into the car and drive off!
Without wasting any time, it felt like
our adventure started right from the airport 💚
To be honest, I was a bit worried about driving abroad at first,
but since Canada drives on the
right side of the road, driving wasn't difficult at all.
The roads are wide, the lanes are clearly marked,
and local drivers are generally very polite,
making the drive so much easier than I expected!

@ Just follow the signs for the rental car company you booked!
When returning your car, just head back to
the same place where you picked it up.
Simply follow the Returns signs,
and you'll find the drop-off area with ease!

4. Recommended Driving Itinerary by Rental Car
In Banff, driving around
is a breathtaking journey in itself!
Here are some of the most memorable routes
I highly recommend exploring with your rental car 💚

📍 Lake Louise Sunrise
We arrived early in the morning to catch
the sunrise at Lake Louise.
The way the lake changes color in real-time as the sun comes up
and the distinct hues after sunrise are completely different,
so catching the sunrise is an absolute must 💚

@ Hiking Moraine Lake, Sentinel Pass
📍 Moraine Lake Sunrise
We also woke up early to see
the sunrise at Moraine Lake.
The vibrant emerald lake set against the majestic, snow-dusted peaks
was unreal and incredibly beautiful!
Plus, if you arrive early and go for a hike,
you get to experience a completely different, unique view of Moraine Lake 💚
A rental car is practically a necessity for a Banff trip,
and I highly recommend it, especially if it's your honeymoon!
The freedom of having your own wheels completely elevates the quality of your trip,
and since it makes such a huge difference in overall satisfaction,
not getting a rental car would have been my biggest regret!
✔️ Banff Honeymooners
✔️ Photography-focused travelers
✔️ Anyone who loves nature and the great outdoors
If any of these sound like you, I highly recommend a road trip adventure.
That's it for today's post! See you in the next one 💚

You will need your passport, an international driving permit, and a credit card in the driver's name. You must present these documents when processing your rental at the Rental Car Centre inside Calgary Airport.
It cost ~$397 for 4 days when adding full coverage insurance on-site. This is the total cost, including the amount paid during advance booking and the additional insurance premium paid on-site.
If you choose the prepaid fuel option during the rental process, you do not need to return the car with a full tank. To return the vehicle, simply follow the 'Returns' signs at the same location where you first picked it up at Calgary Airport.
Canada has right-hand traffic, which is the same as in South Korea. The roads are wide and the lanes are clear, making it relatively comfortable to drive just as you would in South Korea.
