If you're looking for ways to travel from Cairo to Aswan,
chances are you have a Nile River cruise or a Luxor/Aswan tour on your itinerary soon.
Especially if your plan involves staying in Cairo for a few days before boarding a cruise in Aswan,
you might be wondering how much travel time to factor in.
If you have a lot of luggage or find overnight travel inconvenient,
you might be even more confused about whether to choose a bus or a flight.
In this post, I'll detail everything from comparing travel methods and prices from Cairo to Aswan,
the reasons for choosing a flight, where to catch domestic flights at Cairo Airport,
to a review of my experience on EgyptAir flight MS149.
I'll lay it all out for you.
01. Comparing Buses and Flights from Cairo to Aswan
When you search for ways to get from Cairo to Aswan,
three options usually come up: bus, train, and flight.
However, in reality, it often comes down to a choice between a bus and a flight.
📌 Comparing Travel Options from Cairo to Aswan
Mode of Transport | Travel Time | Price |
Bus | 10-12 hours (14-16 hours depending on road conditions) | One-way ~$16-~$30 (approx. ~$15-~$28) |
Flight | 1 hour 20-30 minutes | One-way from ~$69 to around ~$200 |
For the Cairo-Aswan overnight train,
the sleeper cabin fares are quite high (one-way up to around ~$138),
and there's a wide price range depending on seat class.
So, if you have a tight schedule, a bus or a flight is a more practical option.
Buses mostly depart from downtown Cairo (Adly Mansour Station, Ahmed Helmy Bus Stop) in the evening
and arrive in Aswan the next morning,
making them mostly overnight routes.
While the official travel time is 10-12 hours,
reviews suggest it can take 14-16 hours depending on road conditions.
Fares were one-way ~$16-~$30 (approx. ~$15-~$28).
There were several flights from Cairo to Aswan operating daily,
with a flight time of approximately 1 hour 20-30 minutes.
Fares varied significantly depending on when you booked,
ranging from one-way around ~$69 to around ~$200.
02. Why We Chose a Flight Out of the Three Options
Our itinerary required us to board a Nile River cruise in Aswan,
so we couldn't afford any unpredictability with travel times.
After comparing them, we found many reviews stating that buses could be delayed by several hours depending on road conditions.
We decided that this wouldn't work well with a fixed schedule like a cruise boarding time.

Indeed, checking the booking page showed that
Cairo-Aswan flights had multiple time slots available each day,
allowing us to flexibly choose one that matched our cruise schedule.
(Plus, even though it was a budget airline,
7kg carry-on and 23kg checked baggage were included!)
If you have a fixed itinerary, like a cruise or an Aswan tour package,
even a budget airline flight is a reliable option for precise travel times.
a flight is the safe bet.
Conversely, if your schedule is flexible
and you want to save as much as possible,
taking an overnight bus is a great way to save on accommodation costs too.
During peak season, morning flights often sell out first,
so I recommend checking the schedule for your desired date
in advance.

03. How to Catch Domestic Flights at Cairo Airport

Cairo International Airport is divided into three terminals: T1, T2, and T3.
Terminal numbers can be flexible depending on the airline and season.
Even when I checked recently,
EgyptAir and Air Cairo used Terminal 3,
while Nile Air used Terminal 1.
I recommend taking a screenshot of the terminal number written on your e-ticket after booking
and double-checking it the day before you arrive at the airport.

So, from where our Uber dropped us off,
to get to Terminal 3, we headed to
the shuttle bus stop at the airport entrance.

The shuttle buses run continuously, regardless of time, and they're free!
Before boarding, it's a good idea to double-check which terminal your bus is going to,
just to be safe.
04. My Actual Boarding Experience

After that, we arrived at the domestic departure gate,
and it was definitely less crowded than the international terminal.
Even though it was a domestic flight, we had to take off our shoes
and underwent a thorough body search before boarding.

Since it was a domestic flight and only about 1 hour and 30 minutes long,
the plane wasn't huge,
and we took a bus to the aircraft boarding gate.

Even so, for someone around 170 cm (5'7"), the interior seats weren't cramped,
and even for such a short flight, they provided water and a light snack as an in-flight meal.

As we slowly approached Aswan,
literally all you could see outside was ochre (yellow-brown)!

We quickly arrived at Aswan Airport,
and then took another bus to the baggage claim.

Our baggage came out super fast,
and there was even a fee-free ATM inside Aswan Airport,
so we completed our cash withdrawal there.
After that, we headed off to board our Nile River cruise!
If you have plans in Aswan,
make sure to first check if there are flights available
at your desired times!
