How exactly do you get from Cairo to the remote Siwa Oasis?

Siwa, a captivating oasis village nestled in the heart of the Western Desert, isn't easily accessible. There aren't many direct routes from Cairo, but the most common and reliable method is by taking an **overnight bus from Cairo to Siwa.**

My travel companions and I embarked on this very journey, spending approximately **13 hours on the bus** before finally arriving in the tranquil Siwa.

01. How to Travel from Cairo to Siwa

The most straightforward way to reach Siwa from Cairo is by **long-distance bus.**

Most travelers opt for this method to traverse the vast distance to Siwa.

Since the journey involves crossing a significant stretch of desert, the travel time is quite extensive.

While mini-buses are an option, we prioritized comfort for such a long haul and chose the larger, more spacious overnight bus.

02. Where to Buy Siwa Bus Tickets: Cairo Bus Terminal Location

This is the **Cairo Bus Terminal** where you'll purchase your ticket for Siwa, and it's also where you'll board your bus when it's time to depart.

Initially, we followed Google Maps directly to the pinned location, only to find ourselves facing a fence. We had to backtrack, realizing that the pin itself wasn't the entrance. Instead, **look for this distinct entrance!**

While we took a bit of a detour, if you spot a building that looks like this, you've found the **Cairo Bus Terminal entrance!**

As is customary, there's a quick **baggage check** at the entrance before you can proceed inside.

03. Siwa Bus Ticket Price & How to Purchase

Once inside the terminal, you'll find the **bus ticket counter** on your right. Simply state your destination, Siwa, and they will direct you to the correct bus company's window.

We purchased our **Siwa bus tickets** directly here.

The bus ticket costs **480 EGP**, which is approximately ~$10 USD.

There's typically **only one bus per day** to Siwa, and tickets can sell out quickly. It's highly recommended to visit the bus terminal earlier in your Cairo itinerary to **purchase your tickets in advance.**

For a more comfortable journey, consider booking **two seats per person.**

Given the affordable price of the bus ticket, this small splurge can make a huge difference in comfort for the 13-hour ride.

04. Cairo to Siwa Bus Experience

Our bus departed at **10:00 PM**, almost precisely on schedule.

The bus made several stops at intermediate terminals to pick up more passengers, suggesting that the Cairo terminal serves as the starting point, with additional pickups along the route.

You'll take your assigned seat according to your ticket number. A ticket inspector will come by to **tear off the top portion of your ticket** as proof of check-in.

The bus interior was surprisingly clean, and it even offered **USB charging ports**, which was a huge plus for keeping devices powered.

The seat spacing was quite generous, and most passengers settled in for the long journey by covering themselves with blankets and sleeping.

We took **motion sickness medication** before boarding, which helped us sleep deeply for most of the ride. Before we knew it, we were almost in Siwa!

(The air conditioning can be incredibly strong, and we found ourselves shivering during the night!)

05. Arrival in Siwa

While we expected to be dropped off at the **Siwa Bus Terminal**, the bus actually stopped in an open area near the location pinned on the map above.

So, we immediately shared our current location with our accommodation and requested a pickup.

Our bus was originally scheduled to arrive around 7:00 AM, but we experienced a **2.5-hour delay**, finally reaching Siwa around 9:30 AM.

Egyptian bus schedules can be quite flexible, so it's always a good idea to build some **extra buffer time** into your travel plans.

To reach the enchanting desert oasis village of Siwa, taking the bus from Cairo remains the most popular and practical option.
