Vienna is famous for its coffee, so cafes are a must-include on any travel itinerary. Sacher, Demel, and Central are often mentioned as the three great cafes.

Among them, Cafe Sacher is where the Sacher Torte, Vienna's signature dessert, was first created, making it worth a visit for the cake alone.

Its location right near the Opera House and the Albertina Museum makes it easy to integrate into your sightseeing itinerary, and you can even book your preferred time on their website.

1. Cafe Sacher Location, Opening Hours

Cafe Sacher is easy to find, located right behind the Vienna Opera House and very close to major tourist attractions.

✔️Opera House: Approx. 2 minutes walk

✔️Albertina Museum: 2 minutes walk

✔️Demel (one of Vienna's 3 great cafes): Approx. 8 minutes walk/

✔️Cafe Central: 11 minutes walk

If you want to visit all three, perhaps as part of a cafe tour, it's definitely doable to group them together on one day.

Opening hours are the same every day.

Operating from early morning until late at night, it's convenient to fit into your sightseeing schedule.

Cafe Sacher opened in 1876 alongside Hotel Sacher, and the hotel is still in operation today.

And if you'd rather just pick up a souvenir instead of dining in, you can find the souvenir shop by turning right from the cafe entrance.

The interior is entirely decorated with red velvet, a color that could easily feel outdated, but thanks to the chandeliers, high ceilings, and gold-leaf designs, it felt incredibly luxurious and antique!

2. How to Make a Reservation

Cafe Sacher accepts both walk-ins and reservations.

I visited during the peak holiday season at the end of the year, and when I tried to book Cafe Sacher, all dates during my stay in Vienna were already fully booked, so I had no choice but to wait in line.

I intended to go earlier, but I was so tired that I slept in a bit, ending up arriving at the cafe at 8:50 AM. The line was already long, and it took about 40 minutes to get inside.

If possible, it's better to make a reservation in advance on their website.

You can select your desired date, time, and number of guests. If your chosen time is unavailable, the system will automatically show you the nearest available booking slot.

After that, you'll need to enter your name, email address, and phone number.

During the reservation process, you'll see a charge of 15 Euros per person along with credit card information. This isn't an immediate payment, but a guarantee to prevent no-shows.

It's stated that you will be charged if you do not show up at the reserved date and time.

Original Sacher Torte

: Born in 1832 from Franz Sacher's original chocolate cake recipe, it features layers of rich chocolate cake with a delicate apricot jam in between, all coated in a luscious dark chocolate glaze

Melange

: A classic Viennese coffee creation, combining espresso with warm milk and a frothy milk topping

Einspänner

: The Einspänner is a delightful strong coffee crowned with a generous dollop of fresh whipped cream

What We Ordered

From its appearance, with that thick layer of chocolate, I expected the Sacher Torte to be incredibly sweet. But surprisingly, once I took a bite, it wasn't as overwhelmingly sweet as I'd imagined!

When paired with the fresh whipped cream served alongside, the cake felt even softer and moister – a truly perfect match.

The subtle tang of the apricot jam beautifully cut through the rich chocolate, making it clear that the Sacher Torte is in a league of its own, distinct from any ordinary chocolate cake.

The Melange was delightfully nutty and smooth, making it the perfect companion for the cake.

The Einspänner here had a distinctly different feel from the ones I’ve enjoyed back in Korea.

I’ve always loved Einspänner in Korea for its captivating contrast between intensely sweet cream and bitter coffee. However, the cream in the Einspänner I tasted in Vienna was barely sweet at all.

Because of this, it was hard to find that familiar harmony of sweetness and coffee I had come to expect, and personally, the Melange suited my palate much better.

I've had the pleasure of visiting all three of Vienna's legendary cafes – Sacher, Demel, and Central. If we're talking purely about taste, Central was the most satisfying, followed by Sacher, and then Demel.

While I wouldn't say the food at Cafe Sacher was overwhelmingly delicious for the price, the experience of savoring the Original Sacher Torte right where it was born carried immense historical and personal significance.

If I were to journey to Vienna again, I might not make Cafe Sacher a top priority. However, I truly believe it's one of those iconic spots that, having traveled all the way to Vienna, you'd feel a pang of regret if you missed entirely.
