📍 Bun Cha Huong Lien
24 P. Lê Văn Hưu, Phan Chu Trinh, Hai Bà Trưng, Hà Nội, Vietnam

A must-visit spot on any Hanoi trip,
Bun Cha Huong Lien has a fascinating story.
Since former U.S. President Barack Obama visited in 2016,
it has become incredibly famous, even earning a spot in the 2023 Michelin Guide.
Today, it consistently draws in tourists from all corners of the globe.
Location

Conveniently located just a 20-minute walk from Hoan Kiem Lake,
accessibility is certainly not an issue. There are also plenty of cafes nearby,
and a leisurely stroll to the lake or St. Joseph's Cathedral is a great way to digest your meal.
You can easily find it on Google Maps by simply searching for 'Obama Bun Cha.'
If your accommodation is a bit further out, grabbing a taxi is always an option.
Inside the Restaurant

While it used to be common to find a queue during peak dinner hours,
the restaurant seems to have expanded, as we were seated immediately without any wait.
The interior is more compact than you might expect.
It gets incredibly busy with tourists (I'd estimate about 80% tourists to 20% locals),
creating a lively, bustling atmosphere.
Thankfully, each floor is equipped with powerful air conditioning,
so you won't have to worry about the Hanoi heat.

Photos of Obama are literally everywhere – you can't miss them! Haha.

The restaurant spans five floors, and we were guided to a table on the second floor via elevator.

The second floor is *the* very spot where former President Obama dined!
The exact utensils and table he used are preserved and proudly displayed.
While it gained fame quite a while ago, its inclusion in the Michelin Guide in 2023 is a more recent testament to its consistent quality and flavor.
It seems the taste has been wonderfully maintained over the years.
Menu

The single portion of Bun Cha, famously enjoyed by Obama, is priced at 50,000 VND,
which is approximately ~$2.
The Obama Bun Cha set, which includes bun cha, nem (fried seafood rolls), and a Hanoi beer,
is 120,000 VND, approximately ~$4.
While it might be slightly pricier compared to some other local Vietnamese eateries,
considering it's a popular spot for tourists, I still find it to be an incredibly affordable meal.
The Obama Bun Cha Set

Since we were on a family trip,
we all started by ordering some Hanoi beer.
Honestly, I couldn't tell much difference from a regular beer, but it was perfectly cold and refreshing! Haha.

The Obama Bun Cha set arrived, featuring the special bun cha, nem (fried spring rolls),
a generous plate of fresh herbs (coriander, various greens, lettuce),
and the Hanoi beer.
Typically, bun cha features the grilled pork served separately from the broth,
but here, it comes submerged in the delicious soup.

Unlike other bun cha spots where the broth and noodles are often served cold,
Bun Cha Huong Lien's version arrived with warm broth and pork, almost like a comforting noodle soup.
It definitely had a different flavor profile than the bun cha I've had back home.
The broth was wonderfully deep and tangy, yet not overly strong, making it suitable even for kids.

The grilled pork had a subtle smoky char and was perfectly infused with the sauce,
creating a harmonious bite when combined with the noodles.
Personally, this was the best bun cha I tasted throughout my entire Vietnam trip.
It's clear it wasn't just Obama's endorsement that landed it in the Michelin Guide; the quality speaks for itself.

However, the nem (fried spring rolls) included in the set weren't quite to my liking.
Described as fried seafood patties primarily made with crab meat,
they had an ambiguous flavor – neither fully meat nor distinctly seafood, if that makes sense.
I wasn't the only one; my family members who tried them also found them unimpressive and didn't finish them.
They were somewhat palatable when dipped in the nuoc cham dipping sauce, but that's about it.

While the restaurant is undoubtedly busy and a bit chaotic,
you don't come here expecting a fancy or refined ambiance.
It was a thoroughly enjoyable and authentic experience.
In fact, I appreciated how the simple interior has allowed it to retain its distinctive local Vietnamese eatery charm,
even after gaining international fame.
Though famous for President Obama's visit, its reputation for delicious food is well-deserved.
If you're planning a trip to Hanoi, Bun Cha Huong Lien is an absolute must-try for an authentic taste of bun cha!
