My journey started from Gwangju, and I arrived in Pyeongchang on a Saturday evening, just past 6 PM. Knowing that attending Sunday mass would be tricky with our travel plans, I decided to look for a Saturday evening mass. A quick search for churches near Phoenix Park led me straight to Bongpyeong Catholic Church.

Bongpyeong Catholic Church is conveniently located about 6.2 miles from Phoenix Park, making it just an 11-minute drive by car.

The church itself sits on a gentle hill. Parking was available right in front, and a friendly usher helped guide us, making it super easy. As you can see from the photos, Bongpyeong Catholic Church might not be grand in scale, fitting its charming rural village setting, but it exudes a truly warm and inviting vibe.

Even on a chilly Pyeongchang evening, the church felt incredibly cozy and welcoming.

A beautiful statue of Mary and baby Jesus greets visitors.

Just before mass began, I was a little surprised to find that parishioners remove their shoes before entering the main sanctuary – a common custom in many traditional Korean homes and some religious sites. The floor was wonderfully warm, a thoughtful design choice clearly intended to keep everyone comfortable during Pyeongchang's famously cold winters.

After mass, I took a few moments to capture the beautiful interior.

Despite the cold outside, the underfloor heating kept the sanctuary wonderfully warm and inviting.

Though small, every detail felt thoughtfully and lovingly arranged, creating a truly charming atmosphere.

Perhaps because we were unfamiliar faces, the priest kindly approached us after mass, asking where we were from and offering a special blessing for our safe travels. Bongpyeong Catholic Church, though modest in size, truly radiates warmth, a testament to the dedication of its parishioners and the priest's genuine care.
After mass, we hoped to explore Bongpyeong Market, which is just a stone's throw from the church. Unfortunately, it was already past closing time, but we still managed to snap a few photos and videos of the market area. You can check out more about the market in my other post here:
