Bonanza Sapporo Review 2026: Local's Favorite Roux & Soup Curry
Forget what you know about Sapporo soup curry! Bonanza, a local favorite, serves up an incredibly rich roux curry that might just steal the show. Find out why!

Bonanza: Sapporo's Unexpected Curry Gem
A Local's Top Pick for Authentic Flavors
During my many trips to Sapporo, I've savored countless bowls of soup curry. But if I had to pick just one eatery that truly left a lasting impression, it would undoubtedly be Bonanza.
However, here's the twist: while I initially went for the famous soup curry, I ended up falling head over heels for their roux curry! This local favorite, Bonanza, completely changed my curry game.

Bonanza might not be on every tourist's radar yet, but trust me, it's a well-known spot among Japanese locals. The moment it opens, you'll see it quickly fill up with a lively crowd!

Operating Hours: Daily 11:30 AM - 8:30 PM
Break Time: 3:15 PM - 5:00 PM
Reservations: Not Available / Takeout: Available
This fantastic spot is conveniently located about a 0.5-mile (9-minute) walk from Sapporo Station. It's also right on the way to the Sapporo Beer Museum, making it a perfect lunch stop if you're planning a visit there.

Parking

Since we always rent a car when we visit Sapporo, parking is a pretty big deal for us. Thankfully, Bonanza has dedicated parking spots right in front of the restaurant, which made our dining experience super convenient!
Interior Vibe

The interior of Bonanza isn't overly spacious. It features two four-person tables, one two-person table, and several counter seats, creating a cozy and intimate dining experience.

On a recent visit, I arrived right at opening, and within just 10-15 minutes, almost every seat was filled with Japanese locals! Since they don't take reservations and the space is limited, you should definitely anticipate a wait during peak hours.

Given the small size of the restaurant, some reviews mention that the curry smell can linger on your clothes for days. While it wasn't quite that extreme for me, I can confirm the curry aroma is quite potent inside! So, maybe don't wear your best silk blouse.
The Menu

While there isn't a Korean menu, I was delighted to find an English menu available, so no need for a translation app!
The menu is divided into two main categories: Roux Curry and Soup Curry.
Roux Curry Options:
- Beef Chicken & Rich Keema Curry
- Beef Tendon Chicken Curry (Chicken Leg)
- Pork Loin Tonkatsu Curry
- Keema Curry
Soup Curry Options:
- Chicken
- Chicken & Vegetables
- Pork
- Pork & Vegetables
- Lamb Keema
- Lamb Keema & Vegetables
- Fried Fish
- Fried Fish & Vegetables
- Vegetables
- Natto Keema
With so many options, you'll first choose your main curry. Then, you'll customize it by selecting your preferred spice level, rice portion, and any additional toppings.
How to Order

The official ordering method involves scanning a QR code at your table and placing your order through the LINE app. However, since we didn't have LINE, we simply called over the staff, and they were happy to take our order directly.
So, don't worry if you don't have LINE downloaded – you can still easily order from the friendly staff!
Soup Curry & Roux Curry Delights

We decided to try both worlds and ordered one Pork Loin Tonkatsu Roux Curry and one Pork Soup Curry.
Roux curry is essentially a thick, rich Japanese-style curry. I was intrigued because Bonanza's roux curry receives almost legendary praise in Google reviews, so I absolutely had to try it for myself.

Even with a "regular" rice portion, it was quite generous! Since I opted for the Pork Curry rather than the Pork & Vegetables, the vegetable portion was a bit smaller.
The visual presentation is also a bit different from other famous Sapporo soup curry spots like Suage or Garaku.

While the spice aroma is quite noticeable, the soup itself isn't overwhelmingly strong. The flavor is surprisingly clean and balanced, so even those who typically shy away from intense spices might find this enjoyable.
I ordered a spice level 3, and honestly, it barely registered any heat! If you're looking for a kick, I'd recommend going for level 4 or higher.

And then there was the roux curry... I honestly wondered what all the fuss was about, assuming it would just be like any other Japanese curry. But personally, this was by far the most delicious curry I've ever had in Sapporo!
The curry sauce is incredibly rich and deeply flavorful, yet it's not heavy or overwhelming at all.

It's a perfect blend of sweet and savory — that "dan-jjan dan-jjan" (sweet-and-salty) flavor profile that keeps you coming back for more without getting tired of it. Truly, it was incredibly delicious!
While the soup curry was definitely tasty, I genuinely believe the roux curry is the true star of this restaurant.

When I travel to Sapporo again, I will absolutely make a return trip to Bonanza just for this incredible roux curry.
If you're in Sapporo, I highly recommend you try their roux curry alongside the famous soup curry!
