Bohol Island Hopping Tour: Local or Agency? (Balicasag, Virgin Island)
Honestly, I wasn't planning on an island hopping tour this time.
I figured anyway, before I learned to swim,
there wouldn't be many good videos or photos to capture,
so I thought I'd come back after I learned.
But yesterday, the tuk-tuk driver who took me to my accommodation
quoted such an honest price,
that I thought his recommendation would be worth trying.
So I made a last-minute booking, haha!
You can book directly on-site like I did,
but there's a risk of getting overcharged...
And you might not meet such a trustworthy local who recommends things so well again...
So honestly, it's best to book in advance.
If possible, opt for a local tour.

Doing something unplanned meant an extra schedule was added,
so I went to bed almost at 2 AM and woke up at 6 AM...
(The tuk-tuk driver said he only slept for an hour...)
My personal review: extremely satisfied.
Unlike Boracay, it was quite good for the price.
(Boracay's local island hopping was just "meh" lol)
There were no extra charges except for the Virgin Island entrance fee.
And for snorkeling and turtle watching,
at Balicasag, we split into individual boats anyway,
which was really great.
Was it because there were fewer people?
In Boracay, there were almost 30 people,
but for the Bohol island hopping tour, there were 11.
Given that they said, "There are only 11 people this time,"
it seems this was on the smaller side.
The group consisted of just me (Korean),
a British couple (2 people),
and 8 Filipinos.
The course first included dolphin watching,
Balicasag snorkeling, turtle watching,
and concluded at Virgin Island.

The Difference Between Korean Travel Agencies and Local Tours
The advantage of going with a local tour
is, of course, the lower price.
Compared to Korean travel agencies which charge ~$80-90,
the local Bohol island hopping tour was 1,000 pesos.
(approximately ~$83 vs ~$17)
Of course, things like food and overall care
are overwhelmingly better with Korean travel agencies.
However, the reason I chose a local tour was,
besides the price,
when traveling solo, local tours are just more comfortable, haha.

Dolphin Watching
For dolphin watching, I did see some dolphins, but not many, haha.
I'm not sure if this was unusual,
but the boatman's face
showed a look of bewilderment, like "Where did they all go?!" lol.
I don't know if dolphins are sensitive to sound or not,
but when dolphins were spotted far away, they would start the engine
and head in that direction.
The engine noise was really loud, hahaha!
I'd run away too, lol.
Still, I did see them, haha!

Balicasag Snorkeling + Turtles
Balicasag snorkeling and turtle watching,
were truly satisfying.
We split into small boats, 2-3 people each,
so we could enjoy it quite privately, haha.
However... two people in my group couldn't swim...
(I can't either, haha...)
After getting into the water at the first snorkeling spot...
both of them panicked,
and didn't get out of the boat again after that.
So I ended up doing it almost like a solo tour,
which inevitably made the time a bit shorter.
Oh, and the snorkeling spot is absolutely amazing.
It's right at the edge where the water gets deep,
and the water color dramatically changes.
You can't see the bottom there.
Chasing after those turtles was an absolute blast! Haha!
I bet if I actually learned how to swim properly, I'd enjoy it even more!
When a turtle makes an appearance,
everyone swarms around it like crazy! Lol.
It can get a little chaotic with everyone trying to get a peek,
but usually, once people have snapped their photos and videos,
they start to drift away, one by one. Haha!
But not me! I was so thrilled, I completely lost myself and followed them to the very end,
chasing them around like a kid! LOL.
Freediving, perhaps?
I've heard about that too, and if I learned freediving as well,
that would truly be the cherry on top...!
For now, I'll stick to learning how to swim first! Hehe.

After all that incredible snorkeling and turtle-chasing,
we had lunch while relaxing on Balicasag Island,
but it can be a bit pricey, so you definitely don't have to eat there if you don't want to.
It's not a must-do.
The mango juice, however, was absolutely delicious!
I ended up ordering a Filipino-style breakfast and some mango juice,
and even though the mango juice came out looking more like coffee than juice,
it was definitely mango juice! Haha.

Virgin Island
Virgin Island was also absolutely beautiful and delightful.
I heard that when the tide goes out here, you can actually walk onto the island,
but when I visited, the water was high, so...
all I could do was enjoy the water from where I was.
The water here was incredibly clear and transparent.
Oh, and just a heads-up, there's a separate entrance fee here.
Most likely, if you book through a Korean travel agency, it'll all be included in your package.
It's not overly expensive, though;
locals pay 30 pesos, while foreigners pay 100 pesos.

It truly is beautiful, but
aside from snapping some gorgeous photos, there isn't much else to do.
I simply took a few blog-worthy shots and then
decided to practice my snorkeling skills! Haha.
The weird thing is, I'm pretty sure I was trying to
breathe only through my mouth with the snorkel,
but water kept getting up my nose, and my eyes were stinging...
I have no idea why! Ugh.
But then, in these calm, shallow spots,
where my feet could touch the bottom, everything worked perfectly! Haha.
However, in slightly deeper water, where there are waves,
or anywhere my feet can't touch the seafloor,
it feels like some inner fear is definitely getting in the way! Haha.

Review: Local Bohol Island Hopping Tour
Overall, it was a fantastic and truly satisfying experience.
However,
the travel time was quite lengthy, and I found myself getting a bit bored.
Seriously, it was *really* long, haha.
If you book through a Korean travel agency, even though it might be pricier,
they often play music and even host little parties on board,
with local staff showing off prepared dances and more,
they definitely make sure you don't get bored! Haha.
They also take better care of you with food (think mangoes or ramen!)
It definitely delivers for the price.
(But wow, it's really pricey.... lol)
If you're doing a Bohol island hopping tour with friends or companions,
going through a travel agency isn't a bad idea at all.
In fact, it's fantastic... if you overlook the price, lol!
