This place holds a special spot in my heart.
It's interesting to think that the Philippines used to be the quintessential Southeast Asian beach destination. For a while, it felt like Vietnam, with spots like Nha Trang and Phu Quoc, was stealing some of that spotlight. Of course, Cebu and Boracay still have their loyal fans, but there's no denying the shift. It makes you wonder where the next big travel trend will emerge.
Alona Beach was always my favorite spot in the Philippines. However, when I visited in 2025, I was quite disappointed by the changes. My original plan for this Bohol trip in 2026 was to skip it entirely, especially since my itinerary was already so packed.
What ultimately changed my mind was a comment from our guide: "Alona Beach has fully recovered to its former glory."
Well, in that case, why not give it another shot?
The first thing I noticed was the updated sand art. It felt like the artists had really leveled up their skills! The new creations also seemed to consider photo composition much more carefully.
In 2025, the sand castles had the vast ocean as their backdrop. This time, they were angled slightly to capture the sand, sea, and palm trees all in one frame.
These intricate sand sculptures are crafted by hand, and after you take your photos, you're encouraged to leave a tip in the Donation Box. What's unique is that it seems to be an exclusive setup – every time I visit, there's only ever one such display.
The large bars that were open in 2025 are still thriving, and I noticed a few more pop-up tattoo and henna stalls along the beach.
This particular spot, perfect for a quick break during an Alona Beach stroll, remained exactly as I remembered it. Those two coveted seats overlooking the ocean are almost always occupied.
Ah, and a new lemon water dispenser has been added!
They even offer free Wi-Fi for up to 4 hours, and the speed is surprisingly decent.
Overall, I could see why our guide said it had 'recovered.' The crowds have returned, and the general atmosphere feels much livelier.
However, what I had truly hoped for was the return of the charming, old-school live pubs that made me fall in love with Alona Beach in the first place. It seems that's a dream that won't come true.
As I noted in my previous Bohol travel post, the beachfront is now largely occupied by resorts and large restaurants.
It feels like those small venues that hosted intimate live performances no longer have a place. Now, either the restaurants and resorts have their own performances, or they simply play music through large speakers.
It's not about right or wrong, but when a favorite travel destination changes so much from the memories you cherish, it's hard not to feel a little wistful.
That's not to say live music is completely gone; larger establishments still host great performances, like this one I remembered from before. However, there are only a couple of options now, limiting your choices. In the past, numerous small-scale live shows were happening everywhere, allowing you to pick one that suited your mood.
Instead, you can find smaller, more intimate spots away from the main beach, deeper into Panglao Island, or even in Tagbilaran. The difference is that you now have to seek them out, rather than having a variety of options right on the beachfront. On the flip side, you could say it adds an element of discovery to your trip!

With large resorts and restaurants now dominating the beachfront, it's difficult to find small, charming live pubs with the old vibe. Instead, there are about two places that host large-scale performances. You might be able to find smaller-scale live music venues further inland in Panglao or towards Tagbilaran.
